'58 back up lights

The back up lights on my '58 Retractable only light up when the headlights are on and I shift into reverse. With the headlights off, they stay dark when in reverse. Is this correct, or is a wire crossed some where?

best of my knowledge that is the way they work as my 58 is the same way. ford did some weird stuff in that time frame.

Thanks for the help. I guess FoMoCo thought of them as a small rear headlight, necessary only in the dark, as opposed to a daytime warning to others that you were backing up. I'll leave them as is.

I think of them as a warning also and when I added them I wired so they came on whenever in reverse. My '55 RanchWagon didn't have them from the factory. My wiring diagram doesn't show them either so I wonder how they should be hooked up??

The early Birds were wired the same way. If you prefer, you can wire them to the ignition switch and hey will go on day or night when in reverse.
