Can anyone tell me what type of material was used for the original headliners in 56? My car has a bow style with what feels like felt. It is (was!) white and needs replacement. Thanks.
It depends on which body style it is. I was checking it out for my 4 door and it used different materials than some of the others if i wanted to keep it original . I believe i was checking it with the "Mac's " catlog .
Here's a link to the trim used in 1957. http://www.1957ford.com/interior/int11.htm
The trim was very similar for my 56. The headliner in my 56 is original and it isn't felt. It is some kind light weight fabric.
This is a good site to check out for breaking down the VIN codes to find out what the car had from the factory: http://www.lovefords.org/vin-information.html Also another good Ford forum for info.If you do replace the headliner in your Ford the rear window has to be removed per the Ford Shop Manual so you will want to order a new seal for it ahead of time.
Thanks. I will check out those sites. Wish the window didn't have to come out but the rest of the car is cleaning up pretty nice and that headliner looks awful...
You might want to check out www.usapartssupply.com they have some good deals on headliners pre-cut and you can call for samples, you might want to get this book too: http://product.half.ebay.com/_W0QQprZ697213 Great step by step pictorial of how to R&R a headliner plus a lot of other things you will want to know.
