54merc how to duals?

I’ve seen the posted photos of relocating the neutral safety switch on y block Fords, but the Mercury has a lever integral to the FOM trans. that is housed in the steering column. Won’t this lever (that isn’t removable) also obstruct the driver’s side exhaust? I have a set of 55 Ford exhaust manifolds that I was going to use. I know the now unavailable Red’s headers were supposed to work. Should I give up on duals for a 54 Mercury?

Yes, it does obstruct the left side. If you can find the extremely rare aftermarket manifold you are good. The way I have seen duals put on is to use the stock manifold and run a pipe from the front of the stock manifold down and back. In fact, my 54 Ford with an automatic had such an arrangement when I bought it. I converted to a manual trans and with the right z bar used a 57 manifold off a car.

If you want to spend $300.00+, there is a seller (not me) on Ebay who is selling what looks to be a factory 1954 Ford/Mercury left side dual exhaust manifold. The part # in the casting shown in his pics is illegible but you can tell if this is the correct one if the part # is EBU-9431-D and the # is cast on the INSIDE facing the engine NOT on the outside as on the rest of the Ford exhaust manifolds. I have one of these manifolds on my own '54 Mercury convertible with dual exhaust. The Ebay Item # is 306774020395. Good luck!
