53 Ford Flathead

Replaced the fuel pump on 53 Flathead. The inlet and outlet fitting openings seem to be opposite of the original pump. Pump to tank flex line doesn't screw into the pump like the old one without an adapter. That part is taken care of. Now, the outlet port to the carb. I still have the original hard line with the compression fittings. The adapter that was in the old pump is too small to fit into the new pump. The original fuel line seems to screw into the pump, without an adapter, but it leaks. Does anyone know what type/size adapter I would need for the pump? I purchased half a dozen from ACE but none fit. Has anyone experienced this problem? Should the line screw directly into the pump, without an adapter? Maybe I need new compression rings? Thanks for any advice. I see there are adapters for the pump at Dennis Carpenter, but the size isn't listed, and I am thinking it might be one that would work with my old pump, but again not for my new one. Thanks again.

You have the wrong fuel pump. Ford changed the inlet and outlet (I believe between 1950 and 1951) leading to the problem you are experiencing. Sure, you can get the right adapters and get everything screwed together, but it's just better to use the proper pump.

This is just another reason for sending your original pump to "Charlie ny" for a rebuild. Not only will it come back better than any replacement you can buy, but you can be sure it will go right back on. I went through this exercise for years before I realized the difference. Not too may folks are aware of it.
