I am getting ready to replace the king pins and bushings in my 42 Fort pick up. I have done this on old fords before. I have always driven them out from the bottom. It looks to me like it may be easier to grond off the top , and drive the out from the top. Have any of you tried this?

No, always from the botttom, I use a short solid drift held by vice grips & a club hammer. You need the front jacked up to get good hammer speed.

Thats the way I have always done it. It looked easier to just tahe off the top, and pop them out the bottom.

Yes, you can knock off the top and drive the pin down. I just removed them out of a 46 pickup front axel that I had in my garage last week. I relize it's a lot easyer with axel on the bench. I removed the pinch bolt and squirted a lot of Kroil in the hole. The next morning I took a piece of pipe that just fit over the big top end of the king pin. This piece of pipe was about 2in. long. I put the axel in my press upside down resting on the pipe. It's nice if you have a buddy to hold the other end of the axel. I was along so I rested the other end of the axel on a coulpe of saw horses. That Kroil had worked it's way aroud the pin and it pressed out real easy. I'm getting to old to swing a sledge hammer for 15 min. It's funny when you get older you figure easyer ways to do something. Walt

That reminds me of an old German saying I learned from my dad: We grow too soon old and too late smart. Bob L

The pins with a washer riveted/pinned to the top would be easy that way but the genuine one piece type are hard as hell, the top lip wont break off easy. You'd have to drive the pin up about an inch and then grind away. Usually. I would have driven the pin up & out by that time.

I just realised, I have a sore right arm right now, I would try your way!
