36 ford 3 brush generator

Hey does anybody have a diagram for field and brush wires inside a 36 ford 3 brush. I haven’t done one in a lot of years. Just cleaned up armature on lathe. New brushes but who ever was in it last time made a mess. Field wires rubbing arm. Wire to cut out bare and close to shorting out. Brushes were arced pretty good. So maybe not wired correctly inside the generator. I do have it grounded very well. 12 volt trying to keep it looking original.
Just wiring inside generator for this 36 3 brush.
Thanks

Looking at the brush plate end the left field wire goes to the adjustable brush. The right field wire goes out through the grommet and grounds using one of the cutout mounting screws.

4 wires out of 2 fields ( other than the common one that links the 2)
Just doesn’t look correct to me. Haven’t done a generator in a long while.
Have 2 left wires. Top field to right is grounded. Left field is power to cut out. Right brush is grounded. So far . Dont laugh it was even worse than this.

There only 2 wires from the fields. Your output wire going out the grommet has been trapped under the left coil making it look like 2 more wires. Pull that wire out from under it.

Those wires look.pretty sketchy. Now would be a good time to remove the fields and rewire them. Make a nrw output wire too.

Thanks I’ll pull fields. I touched up wires to just let me run local for wedding and a 90th b day party for friend. It was even worse. It will go to a pro after turkey day. I did solder new ends on wires and heat shrink for now. Thanks for the help.

Well you were so correct. The bolt / screw for field was stripped so last guy couldn’t figure it out. Welded nut and kept air on field. Got bolt out and wire under field. Thank you so much. It just didn’t look correct. If i could have gone to hershey this would have been your core lol

The adjustable third brush runs the fields. One of the other two brushes is for output to the cut out. The other of the two is the ground brush. One field shoe is wound for north pole and the other is wound opposite direction for south pole. It doesn't get much more simple than that.

Well took your advice. New wires on fields. Beedblasted. New brushes new bearings. New wiring. Hopefully its works for the old 32.

Good move. Now is the time to do it right.

Thanks a bunch for recognizing that wire up under fields. Did what you recommended and actually had to turn down amperage. Slid the brush up a bit now charging at 10 amps. It was as high as 30amp. More than i thought a 3 brush would do. Nu Rex cut off and it should last a bit.
Thanks Steve

I’ve seen those late 3-brush generators retrofitted to Model As to get alternator-style amps to run halogen lights. They were beefy.

Glad you got it worked out. They are good generators when properly restored.
