35 Muffler Fit Problem

Working on my 35 5W. Got a new muffler from MAC's part #48-5230-B. Having trouble aligning the muffler with inlet & outlet pipes through the frame and keeping it below the top of the frame level (body is currently off the car). Seems to me that the muffler inlet and outlets should be 180 degrees offset to line up with the frame holes, but they are not. Has anyone had this trouble or know how to resolve my problem?

Thanks much,
Peder

Peder, Just had the same problem with a muffler for a 39 convert, bought it from C&G Early Ford Parts, and it was in a Dennis Carpenter box. Nice looking muffler, but the inlet and outlet were out of place.....Ed

The inlet and outlet should be nearly opposite sides. We have two NORS aftermarket mufflers left in stock. Priced at $35.00 each. These were made by G & P....I'm sure they are long gone out of business. Nice condition on what I have left.

I have heard of others having this same problem with new mufflers available from the big Ford parts dealers. I personally don't think you can beat MacVP's offer. I would jump on that one and then send the one you have now back to MAC's Antique Auto Parts for credit. Let these big dealers know that their parts, most likely made in China, don't always fit. Here is a drawing showing the correct relationship between the inlet and outlet pipes on a 35/36 Ford passenger car muffler.

One other note.....If your muffler has the outlet pipe in the 8 o'clock position in the above diagram, then it is a truck muffler and will not fit.

Semd the diagram to mac's and tell them this is what its supposed to look like, Maybe they could correct the problem

had the same problem with dennis carpenter and joblot on a 36. joblot straightened it out. give them a call . they are familiar with this .

I just came up from the garage. The muffler I have looks like the one in the diagram above from Don Rogers. I think that diagram is wrong. Looking at the pictures of Waynes car, his muffler obviously works and does not match Don's diagram. Now I thinking that they are being repo's per the wrong diagram and that's why they don't fit.

Had the same problem years ago with a repo muffler I got from Rick's. I cut the outlet pipe out, cut another hole in the end of the muffler and weldedit back on then patched the original hole. I guess the pattern used by our vendors is wrong.

Don,

Now you got me wondering, is my muffler installed wrong? I bought this one from Mac's several years ago.
