32 B won’t go over 50mph

Over the winter I put a Schwams 4 cylinder in my 32. Is has the insert bearings and touring cam. Also put a 3:54 gear in the diff to make it more drivable.
After the recommended break in of 500 miles I tried to open it up to see what it would do… 50mph. That’s all. Not sure where the problem is.
Looking for advice.

Re: 32 B won’t go over 50mph

how are you settling the timing?
Has the automatic advance work properly ( check on distributor machine or with tachometer and timing light.
In the 30s there were 2 different timing settings in the tune up book depending on the gasoline.

Check to make sure the carb is opening up all the way with the pedal to the floor. You might have the throttle linkage out of adjustment.

Re: 32 B won’t go over 50mph

Your Distributor has a timing adjustment so you can play with the advance somewhat.

Re: 32 B won’t go over 50mph

When I was a kid, common knowledge was that 55 mph was about all a Model "A" could do; are the "B"'s supposed to be that much faster?

Re: 32 B won’t go over 50mph

My model A does near 70 and it’s a stock engine.

Well, the ones we had were pretty well worn out by the time we got 'em.

(Come on, you can tell us; where is that hill?):D

Re: 32 B won’t go over 50mph

No hill this is South Jersey the only hills are the bridges and it had grooved pavement so I kept it under 65 on the bridge— the radials are much better than the old tires on the grooved pavement— and I doubt the speedometer is off much because I was passing cars.(65 mph area)

Re: 32 B won’t go over 50mph

Our B4 with 3.54 gears and 750 x16 rears moved very well . But with that setup first gear was a little tall to go slow.
