30 fenders

I have a good pair of 1930 fenders: can I take the front piece of splash apron off and use them on a 1931? Thanks, E LaBrash

The width of the flange where the "nose" of the apron is spot-welded is thinner on the '30 fender than on the '31. So you'll have to weld about a 3/16" strip of sheetmetal the length of the flange. Then you'll have to create the slotted holes that are used to bolt the fender to the front of the '31 splash apron. And you'll have to trim and bend the reinforcing strip at the rear edge of the fender (at the area that bolts to the running board), such that it does a 90 degree bend for about an inch toward the front of the car along that flange you just enlarged. Additionally, the crease in the fender that runs from front to back goes almost to the front edge on a '31 fender and it ends or sort of fades out a couple inches back from the leading edge of the fender on the '30 version. The Judging Stds show this.

I think it's a bit easier to go the other way...to take a '31 fender and make it a '30. I just did a pair on mine and it took a couple hrs of work.

The crease can be fixed with a dull chisel.

The flange could be extended, but check first as I think I have seen some with a long flange that would just need some oval holes put in place. It should not be too bad to add the 1/2" or so that you need. First make sure the splash apron fits in the fender and keep checking as you weld. Remember each weld is a shrink point and do hammer on dolly hits to correct the shrinkage.

Goto my website and you will find hints on how to get front fenders to fit your car.

I know of 1 Model [In late Nov.1930 the 190A Vicky] was the first to use the 2 piece running boards with the 1931 front fenders. But i have seen "EARLY" 1931 still with the 1930 style and with the 1930 radiator shell. It all depends on stock at different plants. I pretty sure... I am sure someone will be along and correct me....l.o.l. Paint your car all black and you'll never go back...:>) to colors
