3 Speed Overdrive

I have a 55 Ford Fairlane and was crusing along in overdrive when all of a sudden the car shifted back in to third gear. I could not get it to shift back into overdrive, I then stopped the car and tried it again no overdrive, I tried it once more and it then shifted fine. Is this a common problem? I should also mention we just were on our way back from a 2hr trip if this makes any difference. Any help would be welcome.

That sounds like fayed wires touching each other, or a shorted kick down switch. Look there first.

i had simlar problem i changed kickdown sw. still didnt work i changed relay still no go finally pulled solenoid cleaned up points touch wood she is going great

If it blew the fuse it would have never started working again--Switch or wire problem as already stated.
