1966 fairlane power steering

I would like to put power steering on my 66 fairlane which would be best, a rack & pinion or the original unit.

Try to find the original style. They leak, they can be expensive, but the aftermarket rack and pinions loose so much turning radius it took me three cuts to get out of my own driveway. Off it came and down the road it went.

The original system works well, but is prone to leaks. You will need a steering box for a power steering car, as I have heard that they are different than a manual box. Mine on my 69 Torino drips at the control valve. I have a seal kit to install, when I get the time. Try to find a donor car in the wrecking yard to get all the pieces that you will need, steering box, control valve, cylinder, pump, hoses and all the brackets.

Hi the only difference in the steering gear is that the one for PS had a little different ratio . You can use ether one and you won't tell much dif. At the dealer 50 years ago we never changed the gear box when we put PS on. We just put the cyl and pump and related parts. Bill

Borgeson sells a power box kit to fit a fairlane, also some full size and mustangs as well. Not cheap, but neither is the original assist system with new components
