I’m finishing up on my C4 conversion and wondering what I need to do about replacing the speedometer cable and gear. Any help would be appreciated.

For the speedometer end, Ford used the one you have now for quite a few years. For the trans end, you will need the 57 and later end.. Mustang speedo cables seem to be the ones to look for as there are a lot of them available. It has a clip on gear at the trans end.. Look on ebay under Mustang speedometer cables and you can get an idea of what it looks like. Measure for the length you need. On the Mustang (and Ford cars) there are number of lengths available so you should be able to get one that is close to the length you need. As far as the gear for the trans end (the driven gear), there are a number if them with different tooth counts . Probably get one in the middle (tooth count) and start from there. Once you get the car on the road, see how much the speedo is off (if any) and then you can change the gear (more or less teeth) to bring the speedo in sync to actual speed.

The drive gear in the trans is not a separate item. The the grooves for the driven gear are machined into the rear shaft on C4's.

I put a C4 behind the 312 YBlock in my Tbird and went through what you are doing.

Caveat - later Mustangs did go to a different end later on in the years (don't know which year) so make sure the ends are what you need. And, the trans gear comes two ways - the tilt of the teeth are opposite.
