1940 Merc rescued “barn find”

Re: 1940 Merc rescued “barn find”

You may consider just adding to this discussion as you make progress you wish to share with the forum, that would keep it all in one place. An example of this is from user sugarmaker and his 1932 dually truck. That is one extended, rambling discussion that everyone reads when there is an update.

I spotted this 1939 Mercury Eight Convertible in open storage in Grass Valley, California back in 2013.
Storing a car like this in the open is an absolute waste.

I really love the second photo above. That car is a thing of beauty. Are those Goodyear airwheels balloon tires or just some too big tires from the '80s or such? I'm hoping he takes that merc into a shed when fall comes around, but in that climate I might have it out all summer. Though my fleet of old ford trucks might look like 'beaters' to some, they NEVER see a drop of rain. Ask my wife about me getting up in the middle of the night and moving some prize under cover.

Cool find. Luckily I was able to rescue mine.
I’ve started to dig in and the cat is amazingly solid in the body but front floors will need to be replaced. I am just gonna bead roll replacements myself. It won’t look factory but I am good with that.

Amazing that your dash plastic is even there, unfortunately, looking worse for ware (which is also typical). There were two (I think) reproductions done on the dash plastic.....neither one in great numbers...I know Gary Wright's run of the set was pretty much "order" based and filled, NO extra's......I saw a set advertised awhile back and can't remember were it was OR who the maker was but it wasn't Gary's set. IF you see a set OR any piece.....BUY It...its one of the hardest parts on a 40 Mercury.....as you can see why.

Re: 1940 Merc rescued “barn find”

In this day & age; wonder what it would take to lay the plastic pieces out in CAD and print new ones. Obviously not something commercially viable; but could be done with the tech that is now pretty common.

Gary Wright did that on his sets.....It was like ALL these "custom" low run, low produced numbers projects......by the time the actual plastic hit the printer.....the cost got to where the price to earnings ratio got to be almost "0". Found the same for reproduction parts for my GP Ford jeep....same same!!! Coordinating and "confirming" actual wants/purchases and getting them ALL in a timely manor AND THEN, actually making the sale.....OR its a big cash outlay in "hopes" you will sell the amount necessary to recoup your investment. THEN IF you have production issues THEN....potential added cost and or re-engineering time add to time potential cost of materials increases...pretty soon your dead in the water!!!

I'm trying to decide NOW IF its worth the time and effort to make the sliding "V8" cover for the 1937 Wayne locking hood ornaments AND IF there would be enough market to make the amount needed to make them "affordable" to the masses verses just how much demand there is for them.

There are 2 separate guys in CA that 3D print the dash plastic for a 1940 Mercury. If interested I can share contact info. I do not know how much it costs.

Making quick progress. Gonna get the motor out to “freshen” up.
Anyone know who can fix a couple broken teeth on the grille?
