1/4 window channel gasket replacement

OK, I am replacing the 1/4 window glass in my wagon. I removed the old glass and gasket cleanly. However, the old gasket was turning into something akin to liquid rubber. My question is this, do I have to remove all of the gasket smears and have a 100% clean channel or can some be left behind? Obviously, clean out any large chunks but what about the smears that I am trying to scrub out?

I'd clean all residue out of the channel. the gaskets are made to fit into the channel a certain way and any residue may not allow the new gasket to seat all the way.

I'm not familiar with a 57-wagon window seal but any time any gasket is removed the replacement needs a clean surface. Just my thoughts.

It may have been sealed with a tar like substance to prevent leaks. It's not uncommon on these old cars to seal the rubber that way. Wax and grease remover is s good thing to have when cleaning stuff like this to preserve the rubber compound. If it doesn't come out then you will need more sealant due to uneven surface contact. A lot depends on the condition of the seal too.

Well got the window in. Now…how do I fix the puckers in the upper corner? I put the inside back in as well, is that all that holds it in place seals it in? I didn’t use any sealant.

At least is back in there with all in one piece. If it leaks at the car wash the it will leak in the rain. If you can see where it may leak then just try to seal the leaky spot or don't drive it in the rain.

That is a replacement for the one that was cracked. And I may try a heat gun to make it lay down and seal a bit better. If not then a dab of some sealant may be in order.
