Thanks all for the good responses, especially the detailed instructions from nkaminar. I will give that a try.

    Spark Advance Level problem

Where do lubricate the spark advance lever? I don’t see the spark lever as a required lubrication point and there doesn’t appear to be an obvious place to lubricate.

    Spark Advance Level problem

My spark advance lever has always been rather stiff to operate but now it hardly will move at all. Has anyone had this problem and does the steering column need to come out to fix it?

    Shift Tower Gasket

Thank you. That’s what I suspected since the horizontal gasket shown in the photo seals the top of the transmission. I installed new shift rail shafts and the plunger and spring kit from Mitchell. The real deal seal had already been installed.

    Shift Tower Gasket

In reinstalling my shift tower I noticed there was a paper gasket on the vertical surface with the recesses for the shift rail shafts.(see photo) A gasket for that area wasn’t provided with the kit from Mitchell and I don’t see that one is available from Bert’s. Is a gasket needed there?

    Turn signals and BrakeLighter

I installed a low profile third light that sits at the bottom of the back window about a year ago. I wired it so it would blink right or left for turn signals and also act as a brake light. It worked fine for quite awhile. I recently noticed this problem: With the engine running the turn...

    Cup holder

I added some mahogany to match the dash to the metal cup holders you can buy through several of the suppliers. The wood might make it a little more friendly to bumping into as the metal is quite sharp on the edges.

    Let's see your cupholder ideas

Added some mahogany trim and woodgraining to one of the steel holders that are commercially available.

    Rubber Mat Fasteners

Attached is a photo of one of the four “studs” above the slanted floorboard on my 1930 Coupe. It’s painted green, is in the center of the photo, protrudes about 3/16” and is about 5/16” in diameter. How do you use these? Do you punch holes in the rubber mat and slip it over the studs or is...

    Starter Bendix bolt broken

To followup on getting the bolt and washer out of the flywheel housing I bought a tool with a flexible spring, internal, retractable grab hook with a magnet on the end. It was $11 at the local auto parts store. I didn't need the grab hook but might be handy down the road. The bolt and washer...

    Starter Bendix bolt broken

Thanks for all the good advice. Although it would probably be OK left in, I'll feel better if I get it out.

    Starter Bendix bolt broken

My starter wouldn't engage so I pulled it and found the outer bolt that holds the spring apparently broke off and the bolt and washer must be at the bottom of the flywheel housing. Replacing the bolt and locking washer is easy enough but how do you retrieve the broken bolt and washer? Or is it...

    Fuel Adjustment

Here's what I found was the problem. As noted above the car was running but not correctly. Found all four plugs were fouled. Cleaned the plugs and reinstalled and it drove better but still not right. Fiddled more with GAV knob and figured out I had it turned all the way out. Apparently when I...

    Fuel Adjustment

Thanks all for the correct direction to turn the fuel adjustment knob. It makes complete sense to turn CW to close and CCW to open. Mine is fairly stiff to turn so may try the dielectric grease. I turned the knob CW until closed then opened about 1/2 to 3/4 turn and am still having problems...

    Fuel Adjustment

When I turn the fuel adjustment knob (inside the car) counter clockwise or clockwise it just keeps turning without coming to a stop. I wanted to turn it all the way to left (counter clockwise) then open it about 1/4 to 3/4 to the position it runs best. Is something stripped?

What Model "A" Book Do You Read the Most?

I inherited a Model A from my Dad and about a year ago started the learning process. I have most of the books mentioned and have used them all. For me, depending on whether it's mechanical work or body work or interior work you need several resources to refer to. One book not mentioned is the...

More kudos to Bert's Model A Center

My experience with Bert’s began in 2015 when I began to get my Dad’s 1930 Coupe running. I knew nothing about Model A’s but always thought the car looked cool. My Dad bought it in 1976 and restored it over a 20 year period then it sat in a garage for another 20 years. There was 40 miles on the...

Whistling sound when clutch is not engaged

Problem Solved! See solution at end of post. Thanks for the advice on the troubleshooting. Here's what I did. I didn't know if ronn meant it likes show tunes or doesn't so I changed the radio dial from Pink Floyd to Show Tunes. No change. I pulled the inspection cover and found the TO bearing...

Whistling sound when clutch is not engaged

Thanks, all for the advice on how to troubleshoot. I pulled the inspection cover off and found the throwout bearing does not spin when the clutch isn't engaged. Also the whistling noise is loudest when the the clutch in not engaged but is still present with or without the clutch in. The more...
