Ignition or the lack of, right now its the latter

Hi everyone, I am just getting a power train rebuild going on a 57 Merc 312. I seem to have a problem getting spark. I changed out the points to a Pertrinix module, and the recommended coil also. With the key off and grounding to the negative on the battery and checking the positive side of...

    Working to locate some parts.

Hi, I am looking for a temp sensor and a oil pressure sending unit for a 1956 Mercury 312. Both are the ones that have the two contact blades coming out the top. I am able to find a temp sensor at Mac's but it is $51.00, seems a bit high to me. Anyway if someone has a good supply house I...

All cleaned up and nowhere to go.

Well I installed the thing back there beside the distributor it for sure fit but it covers a bolt hole. and I am not sure if I may have it backwards or something. I attached a picture for a little advice if possible. Also, you know how one thing seems to lead to another. I have this crooked...

All cleaned up and nowhere to go.

I checked the timing pointer and it fit right up, while there i took a couple pictures of the rear of the block behind the intake. Looks like a fit. hopefully I will be dropping it in soon to check out how it functions a little better. I'm still a little confused on that part.

All cleaned up and nowhere to go.

I'm not sure about the horn mount. This came back to me in a box from the machine shop that did the engine so this was bolted to the engine somewhere i have to assume.

All cleaned up and nowhere to go.

Hello All, I am finishing up a 56 Mercury Montclair engine assembly, and it seems I have a couple of parts left over that I can't find a home for. I think that they are markers, probable one for a timing mark. But the truth is I just don't know. If someone could help me with identification...

How to hold a Merc 312 down?

Hi All, I am in the middle of a Merc Montclair power train project. I am finishing off all the pumps and bolt-ons, before dropping it in. I thought I was covered by taking a lot of pictures before I dis-assembled the thing. I guess I missed on taking some pictures of the motor mounts. They...

    Differential cleanup and reseal

Well KULTULZ, I'm probably a bit on the clueless side of this so I appreciate the advice. I assume the pinion and axle seals have set and dried out and need replaced. I don't have any experience with replacing either of them, so I will need to get googled up on how to go about it. I know it...

    Differential cleanup and reseal

Thank you everyone for the advice, I got it cleaned out last night. Wow what a mess I thought the carb cleaner would thin it down to the point of being runny, and the goo would drain out. I was wrong, it did free it up off of the parts and get it in the bottom of the housing. Then I could...

    Differential cleanup and reseal

I agree that keeping any grit out of there is a priority. As far as a seal I was able to pick one up online at RockAuto. My plan is to put a thin film of Permatex on the cover and align the gasket on that then let it setup. Next put a bead of it on the pumpkin and let it get 3/4 set and mount...

    Differential cleanup and reseal

I am getting started on a 56 Mercury Montclair restore. I found the differential nasty and obviously leaking at the seal. After pulling the plug a little black oil ran out a few spoons full. Next I removed the cover to find thick black goo. The shop is unheated and about 30 degrees, but...
