When you take the head off check it close and the gasket. Sounds like maybe you are getting compression leaking into the cooling system on that side.

I had the same problem on a 40 coupe I bought even the window glass was sprayed with red oxide primer. I used a good quality lacquer thinner and rags to wash it off. It was a success. I used rubber gloves but the thinner would eat them up. Like to have never got my fingernails clean!

Very true! I had some transmissions that had gone through a fire, and the gears were all so soft a file would cut them.

Although they have the same shape they are a different size so no they don't interchange.

I would go the cheap way first. Rering it with a good honing. What's the worst that could happen it would have some blowby. I did that with lots worse cylinders in my young and broke days yes I can still remember that far back!
