Introduction and What Do I have Here?

When I was just a kid a neighbor had a 41 Buick Century. He split the exhaust manifold 5 and 3, boy did that old straight eight bark.

    47 V8 ignition mystery

Before selling the 48 the distributor was rebuilt and the cap replaced. A miss developed right away and the new cap, when removed, was full of brass particles. I sent it back to Charlie and when returned and reinstalled everything worked out fine, the miss was gone. Apparently, it was the cap...

Early Cad engine in 40 Ford

Remember Uncle Tom McCahill who wrote in Mechanics Illustrated magazine? He loved the Fordillac as he named it. He also used to say, "zero to 60 in nothing flat."

    Thoughts on this Hobby

It was exciting to go out and see when the new models were displayed. All the searchlights, balloons and seeing the new ones was quite a time for some of us. We also had all the dealerships in close proximity, so we could make the rounds in pretty good time. A totally different era.

    Hood springs Super Deluxe

When I replaced the hinges and springs on my 48 from Drake, they came as a unit. I don't know if the spring Drake sells separately is the same. Anyway, the replacement was a success as the hood lined up very well and no longer needed a prop.

    Customized 34 roadster

The phrase comes from nautical terminology. In sailing, "by" refers to sailing into the wind, while "large" refers to sailing with the wind. Together, "by and large" originally meant navigating a ship under various wind conditions, but over time, it evolved to mean "in general" or "considering...

    Parts for restorations

I blessed the new owner of the 48 with everything I had accumulated over the years. It kind of surprised me how much stuff there was. My wife nor the kids and grandkids would have had a clue about any of it. Probably would have ended up in the dump.

    a little off-topic, but

Here are some pictures of a Corsair from an airshow from 2017. My uncle piloted these in WW2. I had never been close to one before, but this one was flown that day. Couldn't get to close when they were fired up but caught the prop wash when gravel and dust was flying about 100 feet behind. I too...

What did you do today that was flathead V8 related?

Have seen the pictures and video of this event on YouTube. Looks like a great one to be able to attend. Did you get any pictures? Good luck on selling the 40, you will miss it. I just sold the 48, miss it a lot.

    Fuel Pump Issues

I had never had the riser off before. On removal I see where this riser is warped a bit. Also, where the fuel pump bolts to the riser the threads are almost gone. I see it's pot metal and not aluminum like I originally thought. I'm going to look for a replacement.

    Fuel Pump Issues

Not a stupid question at all. Not missing the tube but I did install the pushrod upside down. It didn't get full action because of the little umbrella being in the wrong place. After reversing the pushrod and pouring a small amount of fuel down the carb, turning over without the ignition the...

    Fuel Pump Issues

I did replace the flex line to the pump some time ago. I blew back through the line just now with the air hose clear to the tank, (old tank replaced 2015) doesn't seem to be any restrictions. And I do use non ethanol fuel, at quite a premium by the way. This is the new pump from 3rd Gen. so the...

    Fuel Pump Issues

How much lift should the fuel pump pushrod have? Have a Charley NY pump that was working but won't pull enough to fill the bowl now. Got a new one from 3rd Gen. and new pushrod it won't pull either. So, looking for the problem. Also found that the threads that hold the pump to the stand are...
