I can give you my builder's thoughts as I am not an expert mechanic but he is. Grooved. Also, just along related lines Babbitt is sufficient for up to 5.5 head if you're going that route. Rod bearings absorb more in general terms. Good luck with it!

Thanks Bob. Assuming shorter part is what goes into the windshield. Then the nut holding cone on and then the wing nut.

Right - so it threads into the cone area, has a stop or shoulder in the stud and then the windshield frame itself, right? Oh, I think I see now that is how the cone is held in place. Makes perfect sense but also tells me I cannot go nuts and really crank vice grips onto the threaded area too...

Mrs. Mack can shift a non-synchro transmission well and used to drive our 30 Standard Roadster regularly. She hasn't tried the 31 yet but I recently unearthed the accesory pedal extenders which at 5' 0" might be helpful. She can see over the hood easier than she can in "her" 40 Packard.

Wow great find and it has to be rewarding to have acquired it after watching for so long. Good luck with whatever route you take. Seems like a great base and body style for a restoration if you decide to do that.
