the starter spring is sticking to the knob but why. must be room to release because when taped it lets go. why would it stick?

Thanks I tried pulling back on the shaft from inside and outside didn't stop until I taped on switch.

I have never had this before. I was bumping the starter from under the hood . it stuck and kept turning over until I tap the switch changed the switch to a new one . still does it. looked like knob had some spot on it so I sanded the brass colored knob and still does it. the switch is...

I had something like that I replaced the motometer with a plain cap no more problem. Good luck
