    Front wheel bearing question

Timken has provided bearings from all over the world for at least 25 years that I know of. In fact their boxes used to say, " could be made in one of the following countries." Then they would list the countries. That was to get around where they were actually made as was a U.S. Government...

    Bearing ID

You could try a NAPA Distributor. They are Federal Mogul engine bearing Distributors. They can give f.M the McQuay part number and F.M. should be able to interchange the part numbers and tell you what they fit. If not Try OlCar Bearings, George Bachleda, ph 1-910-693-3324, About 10-12 years ago...

    Clutch Chatter

For what it's worth. Back in the forties and fifties when my cronies and I were running the thirties and forties Fords, we would all have the same problem in first gear. Ninety percent of the time it was the springs in the disc. Most times they would be cracked. Occasionally they would be very...

putting gas tank hose on filler neck

I had the same problem on my '48 Merc. I finally took a pair of in and out calipers and measured the pipe o.d. and the hose i.d. There is no way they would fit. I contacted the Old Ford Distributor and they took the Chinese hose back and sent me another one. Although a tight fit, I liberally...

    48' mercury convertible

Looks real good from where I sit! Sure worth saving. Jim TM is correct too. To the left of the Voltage Reg. is one of the Columbia controls that the Speedo cables go through. I don't see the vac/elec control that is usually mounted on the rear of the drivers side head. Not unusual as they...

    Wipers don't work

About five years ago had the same problem on my '48. Started checking some Ford sites and I can't remember which one but it said to shoot a small amount of ATF into the intake side. Worked like a charm and they're still going as strong as new. Maybe you'll be as lucky. Rich O.

    48' mercury convertible

My '48 that I just sold was black and looked like the one that '47 Merc. posted except the interior was maroon and gray and had every option available. Including Columbia rear it also had dual everything, spots, mirrors, exhaust, heaters, fogs, etc. It was completely stock except for California...

    Flathead hard start when hot

I grew up with "flatties." They were the most dependable engines on the road. Always started on half a revolution hot or cold, covered with snow or water. My Dad never had one overheat and never, no matter what the conditions, had one fail to start. When our neighbors couldn't get their Chevys...

How do you handle disrespect for you & your car?

Some of you old guys out there like me might remember a movie about 50 years ago. I can't remember the name of it but think of the Humphry Bogart era. A guy comes up to another guy and says, " hey how much you want for that?" The response? "If you have to ask you can't afford it!" I thought that...

    Flooding carb

I know this has been discussed over and over but I will add my two cents only as some information from my experience. I had replaced the carb four times on my Merc. only to find out that the flooding when hot and during hot weather ( above 80 deg.) was due to the ethanol. Also Ken Ct. informed...

    Make your ethanol-free gas!

Boy, sounds like a can of worms! I don't know about other states but here in N.Y. State, ( land of taxes and regulations ) I've gone to my local Marinas to purchase non ethanol, Nope, NYS has now forced the Marinas to pump only ethanol gas. Tried local Airports, no success! However went to local...

    moisture in cap again

Most good auto parts stores or marine supply or marinas will stock CRC. You could probably find it in an Overton's Marine Supply Catalog. Overton's is a Nationwide supplier and their headquarters is in S. Carolina I believe so you should be able to find an Overton's or a West Marine Supply in...

    moisture in cap again

No one has mentioned CRC Marine ( green can ) I've had numerous boats used in salt water. Always sprayed ignition and all electronic connections with CRC, that is what it is designed for. Never had a wet or corrosion problem. You don't have to wipe it off either. Spray it on and go. Rich o.

Napa or Timkin Part # Rear Drum Axle Seals 1939

As far as I know, neither NAPA nor Timken ever manufactured their own brand of seals. They either contracted National (Federal Mogul) Victor or Chicago Rawhide (O.E. Manufacturers) to supply them with their needs. In fact the last time I looked at a seal box at my local Napa store, Federal Mogul...
