    Rough running engine

My recently rebuilt engine runs rough. It starts and idles fine (when its running on the idle jet). But when I drive it the engine has a more or less steady miss. The more power I use the more intense the miss is. At first I though it might be electrical. I replaced the condenser. No change. I...

    Wrist pin clearence

I want to put new pistons in a stock model A engine. The wrist pin diameters of the new pistons are smaller than the wrist pin diameters of the old pistons I will be replacing. ( It's a long story) The new pistons wrist pins will have a .002 inch Clearance between the rod bushing and the pistons...

    Evans waterless coolant

I've been running Evans waterless coolant for a year now and I like it. No rust in the engine, no overheating, it works well. However lately I have noticed coolant weeping through the radiator outlet gasket and around head bolts and some small amount in the oil pan. I'm hoping I don't have a...

    Rough running Car

Finally got it fixed. After trying everything else I rebuilt the carburetor. The main jet and the compensator jet had a build up on them. I used a gas tank sealer when I restored my car. The sealer worked well for several years but now it seams to be dissolving. both jets were open but very...

    Rough running Car

I can't figure out what is wrong with my car. It is a fully restored 29 Model A sedan. The car ran great until lately. Now when the car first starts it runs fine, but after a couple of miles the engine starts to misfire. The problem gets worse as the car warms up. The coil, points and condenser...

    Shortened pitman

Hello Werner My car is restored including the suspension, so everything is tight. I installed the shorter arm and it does help. The car is easier to drive and I don't notice any negative effects. I don't know what the effect would be on a car with a worn suspension.

Backfire, I'm running out of ideas...

Hi DRG I had a problem similar to what you are describing. My car started out as a complete basket case. Every part was rusty. I cleaned and derusted everything including the carburetor. The problem I had was caused by the enlargement of the idle passageway and the idle port in the throat of the...

    temperature gauge

I agree with Kurt, however if you don't have a thermostat you may never reach 160 on cool days.

    Shorting pitman arm

Shortening the pitman arm will make it easier to steer. Just make sure everything else in the suspension is good.

    Mystery Engine Knock

is the piston hitting the head? The engine may have been fine when it was first rebuilt but a cracked piston could be giving you trouble now. Buy the way, I hope I'm wrong.

Thread size for Model B jets

Gary is correct. 10-34 is close to 5mmX .75. I think that's why the incorrect size of 10-34 was used. 5mm x .75 is available. Try MSC or McMaster.

    Condenser mount

Is mounting the condenser directly to the coil more reliable than mounting it to the points? What condenser is best to use for this? What side of the coil do you use (+ or-) ? If your running this set up how do you like it? I have a stock 6 volt system. Thank you in advance

    Waterless coolant

Does anyone use Evans (or any other) waterless coolant. Is it any good for a model A? How well does it work? I'm interested because of the corrosion protection it might give to the model A cooling system.

    Condenser check

Last time out in my A the car started running a little rough on the way home. I couldn't find anything wrong. I suspect something electrical. How can I check the condenser to see if it is starting to fail. Can I use my VOM to check its condition? ( I know, use a new one). Is anyone using a...

    .0435 pistons

Check your bore size. A .040 piston may be able to have the skirt knurled oversize and fit just fine. My experience with Model A pistons is that they fit tight to begin with. The engines do run cold compared to modern engines so the pistons don't expand as much. Therefore the pistons are made...

    High compression engine life.

I am still running a stock head. I'm sure the high compression heads run better, more power, cleaner burning, etc. However that also means more load on the bearings. With a stock oil system (not pressurized), I did not want to add more load to the bearings. Am I wrong? Are you guys with the 5.5...

Ok, I've got a question for the Northerners....long.

Don't be in a hurry to drive your beautiful car on salty Michigan roads. (Isn't there a salt mine under the city of Detroit?). I have the same problems you do (Car, Wife, Garage). The NFL helps a little but its not enough. Maybe we should start a support group.

    Generator vs Alternator

I tried to run a generator because I want my car to be as original as possible. I finally switched to an alternator. It works much better. No cut out problems, better battery maintenance , better lights. If your car is a show car I would use the generator. For a go car the alternator is easier /...

    Rotella T4 oil, dirty oil

Your oil is not getting dark because it is the wrong oil. The air and oil filters also have little to do with it. It gets dark because of the incomplete and inefficient combustion of the Model A engine. Unburned fuel and water are the biggest culprits. Your modern car stays cleaner-looking...
