Removing Corn Head grease from steering

I started building hotrods back in 1953 and i always wanted a '34 Roadster which I would make into a hotrod but it never happened. In about 1970 I ran across this '34 Cabriolet to convert but when I got it home and looked at it i realized that it was both nice and stock. knowing that they are...

Removing Corn Head grease from steering

Ha! you may have hit the nail on the head with the I'm older comment. I'm 84 and I've had the '34 for about 45-50 years now. Old armstrong steering is very likely more difficult than Young armstrong steering!! Thank you.

Removing Corn Head grease from steering

I installed the corn head grease long ago for the same reason that others have, to eliminate the leaking, and it has worked well for that but my '34 steers harder now than it ever has. Looking at my period Ford lubrication chart it specifically states "Do not put any type of grease in the...

    Removing upper steering shaft grommet

Thanks Bill OH. After trying many other techniques without success I used your drilling and vacuuming technique and it worked well. I was concerned about small pieces getting down into the lock mechanism or even down into the steering box but I was pleasantly surprised to find a block off above...

    Removing upper steering shaft grommet

I'm considering removing the steering column and pushing it out from the underside. At this point removing the sterring column seems straightforward. Any comments about this approach?

    Removing upper steering shaft grommet

1934 Cabriolet. I am in the process of installing one of Dan Brusegard's upper steering shaft bearing kits. I'm at the point of having to remove the original (I assume) rubber grommet in the upper end of the steering column. I tried inserting long screws into the grommet and pulling but this...

    Problem Removing Steering Wheel

Thanks to everyone who shared their experience and knowledge. With your guidance and another pair of hands from my son I finally got the light control shaft removed. Now my problem is removing the steering wheel itself. I have a decent selection of pullers but I'm concerned that standard...

    Problem Removing Steering Wheel

OK, that makes sence. Thank you. Do I need someone at the steering wheel to keep the light control tight against the steering wheel while I push the light switch spider back to expose the C-clip? Will I then be able to remove the C-clip with needle nose pliers?

    Problem Removing Steering Wheel

I need to remove the steering wheel on my '34 to replace the bushing in the steering column with an upgrade bearing. Before I can remove the wheel I need to remove the lights and horn button assembly and in order to remove that I need to remove the tab at the bottom of the control rod. See...

    Military flathead engines

I have a '50 or '51 Ford Flathead engine that I suspect came out of a military vehicle because it has a tag on it stating that it was rebuilt at Fort something ( I don't remember for sure). My question is are Military engines different from passenger car engines, and if so, in what way are...

    Stiff steering

I haven't driven my '34 for over a year but when I did today the steering was very stiff. It's never been good but this is worse(or maybe It's because I'm a year older). The steering box has been filled with John Deere corn-head grease (or some name like that). When i last worked on the car I...

Gap between door opening and seat

I'm not tall but I am old (81) and I have had both knees replaced which does limit my flexibility and dexterity.

Gap between door opening and seat

I am looking to possibly purchase a '31 A Roadster Pickup but I find that the gap between the front of the door opening and the front of the seat is so tight that I have a very difficult time getting into the vehicle. I have been told that this is a known issue with those vehicles. My question...

    Removing upper radiator hose

All I wanted to do is install a pair of Robert Shewman's thermostats. Easy job. Right? well not if you can't remove the upper end of the hose from the radiator. It seems that I need to remove the entire hose but the bottom end is stuck to the water pump. Any ideas other than cutting the hoses...

    '33 Ford mechanical brake question

Back in the 50's when I was building hot rods for folks I would always discard the mechanical brakes and install the hydraulic brakes. It was easier to keep in adjustment, it was what people preferred, and it was easy to install. That said, however I have never experienced a complete loss of...
