Smoking coil and/or resistor in 12v conversion

Machine Girl, I'm hoping the fuse in the circuit will protect the new wiring harness? I have discussed the black ends with a couple of old timers and they tell me this is normal. I let it idle this afternoon for about 40 minutes twice. It seems to be getting a little tired at about 35 minutes...

Smoking coil and/or resistor in 12v conversion

By the way, I have researched the external ballast resistor heating to the extent that it smokes and this seems to be very common, there is even a thread on Ford Barn discussing it. I read somewhere that it heats up to the equivalent of 40 - 50 watts. Not saying I thoroughly understand it...

Smoking coil and/or resistor in 12v conversion

Following up, all was not well. Later in the day I took it out for a short drive to pick up dinner and when I got home it died and wouldn't restart. I began troubleshooting per Les Andrews' guide and figured the coil was bad. I went in search of a coil and "oH mY" If you don't have a car make...

Smoking coil and/or resistor in 12v conversion

Purdy, thanks for the input, what you explain makes a lot of sense now. I printed your reply for future reference when dealing with this. Mike / Marc, I did get the guy back out that did the conversion and he found nothing wrong other than the idle was too low which I was pretty much...

Smoking coil and/or resistor in 12v conversion

My last post seemed a bit uncertain. There is no spec plate or mfg name on the alt but only a bar code with model number. I think I remember the mech. telling me it would be 60 something amps and when I looked the model number up on line I found it to be a Delco 12 Volt with 63 amps. The coil...

Smoking coil and/or resistor in 12v conversion

I think it's Delco 12 volt/63 amp. The coil is wired through the key.

Smoking coil and/or resistor in 12v conversion

Marc, Thanks, that was my first inclination but I'm trying to ween away from the master and try to learn some of this stuff myself by networking with folks that know a lot more thank I do. Machine Girl, It is a 12 volt coil with an external mounted resistor. The amp gauge was replaced with...

Smoking coil and/or resistor in 12v conversion

I have a 1930 Coupe Deluxe that has recently been converted to 12v by a master A mechanic with 50 years experience on these girls. I have driven it for a total of about 60 miles since the conversion about 5 weeks ago. Today I drove about 30 miles and all was well until about the last 10 miles...

    Horn Cover Adjustment Screw Felt

I just installed a new Sparton. So what I get from this is to lightly oil the felt and not put oil directly on the shaft?

    1930 insturment panel light

I had a knock-off instrument panel that didn't have all four mounting screws in it and wouldn't allow me to install a temp gauge using the bottom two screw holes. The two bottom screws were missing and they didn't line up with the thread stationary to the panel. Ordered one from Brattons which...
