Why lock washers AND safety wire???

"I am going through a Model A transmission for an acquaintance who was a terrible leaker, mostly from the rear" Is the acquaintance or the transmission a leaker from the rear? Sorry, just had to ask....

    insurance

Liability insurance is good to have. I have a broadform policy for that. (any car I drive) None of my 14 cars (modern or antique) have any specific insurance. I am 56 and have NEVER (other than health insurance) had a single claim for any kind of insurance (automobile/homeowners/boat etc). Lots...

    Model A parts at Autozone?!

I have had good luck with NAPA and Carquest for old car parts. I never had much luck with Autozone. I don't even bother to check there anymore. Maybe they are getting better or carry different stuff in different parts of the country.

    H2O vs. Pre-Mix...???

Regarding antifreeze being poison to animals....In many states including Washington, all new antifreeze sold must have a bittering agent added so it tastes bitter. Presumably this will keep pets from drinking it.

    Stiff, noisy, uncomfortable ride

I have a stock very good condition driver quality 29 A. It is my first pre-1930 car. I also have a somewhat nicer stock 1937 Chevrolet that I recently brought back from a 10 year slumber. The ride, power, & overall smoothness of the Chevy beats the A hands down. Neither the Ford nor Chevy are...

    Gold Model A Fordor

Ironically the gold plating adds no intrinsic value to the car. The gold in gold plating is put on very thin. There might be $5 worth of actual gold used to do that plating.

Mikeinnj Thanks for the response. I am still a little fuzzy about drilling holes for the rivets and how much to countersink. Thanks

    Riveting Brake Linings

I am replacing the parking brake linings on my '29 A. I bought new linings and one of those $25 riveting tools from MAC's. I have never done it before. Are there instructional videos or directions readily available? Otherwise how do you do it? I am also a little fuzzy on drilling holes in the...

If any fellow Ford Barners get the Seattle Times- I own the 1929 model A featured in the AUTObiography piece in this Sunday's NW autos section.

    Vacuum leak

I replaced the cracked exhaust manifold on my completely stock A. I got the new one from Synder's. When putting it back together there was about a .010-.015 discrepancy between the level of the new exhaust and old intake manifolds. (Exhaust higher than intake) I thought that the gap was small...

    shop heat

My 30 X 48 shop has no heat. So if something really has to get done I move the car to the much smaller (and warmer) garage that is attached to my house. Here in Western Washington there are only about 4 months a year that are to cold to work in the big shop in comfort.

    Manifold

There is better atomization of the air/ fuel mix with preheating (particularly when the engine is cold. In the 70's-80's cars had Thermatic Air Cleaners with that heat stove on the exhaust manifold that piped hot air into the air cleaner when cold to reduce Hydrocarbon emissions. I think a lot...

Model A Thermosyphon with NO Waterpump

It will not hurt a generator if it is not spinning (ie:-broken belt) The only problem is you will not have a charging system and everything will be running off the battery until it goes dead and then the engine will stop. Also.. I am sure most of you remember that many 60's cars and such had...

    Pure Gold/white Model A

Probably costs a bundle to custom gold plate stuff like that. Ironically gold plating is put on so thin that the value of the actual gold is practically zero.

What is your collector car Pet Peeve?

1)Improper use of the word "mint". A restored car for example is not mint. It may be as good as new. But something is only mint once. Kind of like virginity- once you lose it, it does not come back. 2) Sellers that make their car sound like #1 condition over the phone but when you get there it...

Fords garage bar in Cape Coral

Do they have Ford Motor Company's permission? I wonder if there is any problem with trademark infringement. They are using Ford trademarks clearly for their own commercial use. Maybe they have to pay royalties. Someone certainly could not do this with a Walt Disney theme without express...
