    Air/Fuel ratio meters

Being a tool junkie, I am thinking about buying an air/fuel ratio meter (have not used one in almost 50 years) Are there any reasonably priced ones on the market today that will work with old, carbureted cars? Most of the one's I see online are for permanent installation and seemed to be...

    Old car insurance

Thanks for your replies, the reason I thought about this is because, I recently rented a car from Budget Rent a Car at the Kansas City airport. I paid for it with my WSECU Visa credit card who loudly proclaim that renters using their cards are protected for damage to rental cars. I reserved...

    Old car insurance

I have Hagerty. The large print suggests that their policy is liberal for usage. However the fine print could be different. I have not been able to track down the fine print section of my policy.

    Old car insurance

Anyone ever have an insurance company refuse to pay a claim regarding an antique vehicle because the vehicle was allegedly being used against driving restrictions? ie: accident occurred in shopping center parking lot and thus being used for an errand or something similar? Which companies are...

    Water pump packing nut removal

Yes I noticed that the bushing / collar behind the nut is spinning. Probably got messed up by previously over tightening the packing nut. I suppose the only solution is to remove the water pump to deal with it. (most likely have to get a new water pump) Thanks

    Water pump packing nut removal

How do you get the water pump packing nut to move forward to install packing? With the water pump installed on the engine the nut just spins and spins on the shaft but will not move forward no matter how long I move the nut counter clockwise. The shaft remains stationary. if I removed the...

    Cylinder Heads

I have to replace the cracked head on my 29 A. Going by the serial number my Car has a 1929 engine block in it. I got a used replacement head and noticed that the water passage openings in the new head and the cracked head I am replacing are slightly different. Most notably the replacement...

    Need Cylinder Head

I stupidly moved my 29A into my unheated shop last summer without checking to see if I had enough antifreeze. (For years the car was in my heated garage). During a cold snap here in western Washington in January the head froze and cracked. (Never gets cold enough inside a shop in western WA to...

    Starter Motors

Thanks for the input, I will check the end of the armature shaft . Maybe I will even get fancy and us a dial indicator on it. I don't look forward to replacing the flywheel or ring gear though. Regarding the armature if the bushings were worn the shaft might flop around and cause problems?

    Starter Motors

I suppose if the flywheel was slightly loose or bent, or teeth were burred or bent it could cause problems. Missing teeth would be likely for the pinion to spin free but not jam, I believe.

    Starter Motors

My 29A has the world's crappiest starter motor, which in turn has made my A the most unreliable car I have ever owned. I have owned a lot of ancient cars. After replacing the brushes, the starter drive and additionally the switch several times. I have been able to keep it working for a while...

Is Bars Leak still a good temp fix

Maybe I am just jinxed but I do not recall any stop leak product of any kind (Cooling system, oil, transmission etc,) to ever work for me in 45 plus years of dealing with old cars. I have tried Barr's leak a few times and it never did any good. Just my experience though. I always ended up...

    Shock Absorbers

What constitutes rebuildable for shocks? Mine are hopelessly frozen and the arms will not budge no matter what. (soak in penetrating oil, hit with small sledge hammer etc.) I am guessing they are not rebuildable. Since new ones are so expensive I am hoping to stumble on a used set with out...

    Air filters

Are there any air filters available for A engines that significantly reduce intake noise? My engine of course has no air filter, and I am thinking about making my engine a little quieter. Those air maze filters look like they may not reduce sound much. Thanks

    Shocks and springs

I have a 29 leatherback. It is a good driver, but the ride seems pretty harsh. The springs look ok, but when I jump up and down on the front or rear bumpers there seems to be very little movement. (I weigh about 260 pounds) I suspect something is not right, perhaps the shock arms are frozen or...

New guy and I have a weird question

Corvairs use manifold/engine cowling type heaters also. The one on my '63 Corvair puts out tons of heat but if there is the slightist oil leak into the cowling surrounding the engine the whole car gets stunk up when you use the heater. And mine stinks..... Corvair engines are completely...

    Horn Help

Thanks for everyone's input. I figured out the problem, one of the very stiff uninsulated wires going to one of the field coils on the horn motor was bent slightly and just barely touching one side of the horn frame. I bent it back about 1/4 inch and problem solved.

    Horn Help

I have a 6 volt 1929 model A with a Stewart Warner horn which appears to be original to 1929 as the motor and insides look pretty old fashioned. It works good but there seems to be a very slight short to ground somewhere that gradually discharges the car battery. But not enough to sound the...
