Look at the guide thru the spring coils. The guides have a round notch just beneath the top of the spring. Run your bar between the coils into the notch and try to pull the guide down. Jim

If you go to the following thread and post #12 you'll find a PDF file of drawings of the various valves and associated components. On the '34 drawing you will see a drawing of the lower spring retainer/lock for the mushroom tippe valves. Notice that 2 sides of the retainer are flat and parallel...

    Valve differences

While on the subject of valves I need a favor. Original Ford valves had a "bump" around the stem under the valve head. This was actually a bump and not an undercut. I have a mushroom type valve with a bump and a '51-'53 valve with the bump. I'm looking for someone on here that may have a...

    Valve differences

Lawrie I believe the installed height of the '51 thru '53 rotator springts id 1.89" as opposed to the '49 thru '50 springs installed height of 2.125". I am going to my office in a kittlle bit and check this info for sure. This should yield a seat pressure of 37 to 41`#,s according to the Ford...

    Valve differences

Ron, I probably didn't explain things very well, so I'll try again. If I grind the seat 0.020" (verticaly) then the valve sits lower in the block. Since the horseshoe clip rests against the bottom of the deck guide bore, the guide is in the same position as it was before the seat was ground...

    Engine block I.D. pictures

i Believe the '32-'33 valve guides included a frlange instead of the horseshoe clip. Removal of valves had to be done in the valley as the guides could not come out o the top. Jim

    Is this a V8 tool ???

Seems to me it pushes the guide up & out of the block after the horsehoe clip has been removed. It doesn't look like it pulls it down to be able to remove the clip. Jim

    installed height valve and spring

I think the Manleyl ocks are larger than the stock Ford locks as well so that may also compress the spring some more if you use them. Jim

Don't know what I was thinkng when I wrote this. The 41A was a 24 stud engine. Sorry for any confusion. Jim

    Rare 21 stud 59A ?

Not to argue but I believe the 41A blocks were 21 stud. Ford had a cutter to enlarge the valve pockets on the left head so the old heads (81* series) could be used on the new 41A block. The cutter was needed because of the valve angle change post war. Jim
