    Pulling the Cylinder Head

Pulling the head is pretty straight forward. I did it for the first time in my life two years ago and it increased my confidence about working on my car. The old head gasket showed water leaks. I strongly recommend buying the head pulling kit from Snyder's. It is cheap! Following the...

    Starter Bendix

I do not know what the spring is for...BUT...after buying my 30 Tudor my bendix failed within a month...about 200km...came loose and sent one bolt down into the bell housing....or so I thought. I replaced it with a new bendix but could not locate the missing bolt. I had a local mechanic do the...

Physics lesson for the week, suspension

I LOVE the level of knowledge that is exposed on this site! There is something for everyone at every level. I would still be taking my A to a "specialist" garage (at 290 euro per hour) ....that used a big hammer to pound the wrong side of a stainless steel extension into my cast iron exhaust...

Radius Rod...use the rubber ball or not

While surveying the underside my A a few weeks ago for another project I noticed that the radius ball looked odd. Getting a light and working my way underneath I noticed that the rubber ball had been shredded and ragged parts of it sticking out around the periphery of the joint. I have battled...

    VIN location on frame?

For the first time ever an inspector for bi-annual registration (TÜV) asked me where she could locate the serial number on my 30 Tudor . I told her that it was probably buried somewhere that would take disassembly. She reluctantly agreed to stamp the form anyway and I went into the office to...

What has your local Model A club done recently?

My Model A Südliches Weinstrasse 'club' did a sort of 'end of summer'two week long marathon of events. 13 A's plus one 'B', and one V8. We started out participating in a classic car event ending in a parade through Bornheim with lots cheering classic car fans along the route...followed by...

    New 'Death Wobble'

I have been chasing this ghost for two years. I get the 'wobble' very rarely...but it is annoying when it happens..and scares my wife... so I replaced the king pins and other steering components, as well as checking alignment all to no effect. I still get the 'wobble' every once in a...

    How Fast

I recently participated in a Model A event in southwest Germany with 13 cars from as far away as Thuringen (about 420 miles) and Hamburg (about 320 miles). The cars from BOTH of those distant areas drove in for the event. Both said that they were doing 70-80 kmph on stretches of the...

    carb upgrade

Might be opening a can or worms here...but I am considering a carb upgrade to install over the winter down period for my 30 A. I requested prices for a Winfield...but do not know what advantages exist for the SRAU (with accelerator pump) opposed to the SAU(without). I am running a Snyder's 6.1...

    VIN location on frame?

The VIN # on my 1930 Tudor is stamped inside the right front wheel well. An extremely diligent inspector found it for me. I had told her that it could be anywhere on the body including needing to take it apart to locate. She did not seem to buy that thought but was kind and passed the car...

    Leaking gas tank

Thanks a million. I have had this problem with my 1939 Tudor since I bought it 3 years ago. The leak is slight...but the slight gas dampness at the bracket and the rare drip onto the floor is less than optimal. I have tried liquid solder, various fillers, normal epoxy, etc. I really would...

    Bud Vases

The B pillar is the usual place...but seems that they could go anywhere that appeals.

    Tire Pressure

Clearly you have leaks. Pull the tries off the rims and remount with new valves, sleeves, and tubes! Check the insides of each tire for intrusions that could be causing small punctures. Inflate to between 32 and 35 psi. Take your time and do it right and you will not need to redo it. I...

    worn rings???

I installed a Snyders' 61. head and have seen evidence of blow-by' since. A mist of oil under the oil pan that can accumulate enough to drip a little...even after carefully installing a new gasket...a mist of oil coming from the oil filler tube. Nothing dramatic...but it seems to be coming from...

    What Temperature?

Why have a thermostat unless you need quick warm-up times? It does not make the engine run cooler. The extra minute or two in warm up time does not seem worth the effort on a car that is not primary transportation. Am I missing something?

Will High Octane Gas Reduce Knock in a 5.5 or 6.1 Head?

I resisted running high octane fuel in my A out of miserliness, and it seemed to work fine until I installed a 6.1 head. I had some knocking and tried Super Premium 100 octane. It ran MUCH smoother and needed less spark advance manipulation. It was worth the extra 10% at the pump.

2026 Heidlauf Tour for those in Europe

Just a reminder that the 2026 Heidlauf Classic Car Tour is scheduled for 12&13 September along the Sudlichen Weinstrasse (PFALZ) between Neustadt (Weinstrasse) and Wissembourg (Alsace). It coincides with the 'Tag des Offenen Denkmals'...so lots of interesting side trips possible. 140 km if you...

    Replacing head gasket

Just use the crank to get it to the top before pulling the head. That said....my timing gear 'dent' is not exactly correct. I find pulling plug #1 and using a light to get visual of TDC...which is a tiny bit past where the pin indents makes a world of difference in my timing. Also..with older...

    31 Fuel Gauge Installation Problem

Ditto on Marshall's comment re: the old washers and residual cement. If you bought the right kit, it should just right together nicely.

    Long Overdue Praise & Appreciation

I agree with Bob. Kudos to Mike's and Snyders' in particular, from both of whom I have had great and timely service. In Germany we have a couple of Model A parts suppliers...but they are selling about 90% US imported parts. Otherwise the A community would be extinct. There are a lot fewer...
