I had that problem also. I put some WD-40 type oil on the springs. Bought some spring covers. Added some heavy weight oil to the absorbant part of the covers. No more squeaks. Did not take the springs apart.

You may wish to look at a product called Evapo-Rust. It's a liquid. Found some at Harbor Frieght. About $25/gal. There is a web-site .

There might be a little bit more to it than one thinks. The speedometer drive gears aswell as the bearings in the upper drive shaft need lubrication also. Some remove at least (1) bolt from the spedometer drive case and apply grease to what appears to be the u-joint fitting until some shows at...

I like the original paper gasket. torque to about 20 ft-lbs. Cork will not take that much torque.
