Chasing my tail trying to get 1928 tudor running

I helped a friend finish putting an engine in his car. the starter would not turn the engine over. I pulled him with his tractor and he popped the clutch. Worse sound I ever heard from a model A engine. we were taking the engine back out when he set the starter bolts on the bench and noticed...

I don't know how old the old coil was. I would guess at least 25-30 years.

spark, but not in the right places

GREAT NEWS! Put a new coil on and as soon as I turned the key on we seen a jump in the amp gauge that we hadn't seen before. Stepped on starter and in 8 to 10 revolutions she fired right up. The grandson cannot wait for his first driving lesson. Thank you for all your help in finding the problem.

Chasing my tail trying to get 1928 tudor running

The three bolts holding the starter are not the same length! If you put a longer one in that hits the flywheel, It will act as if the engine is locked up. I would pull the starter and see if things turn in gear and go from there.

spark, but not in the right places

Corley, I am getting spark at the points when I open and let them close with my finger. If I turn the key on, the first time the points open when being turned with the starter, I only get one spark and no more. I can see the points open and close, they are set at 20 thousand and clean. I cannot...

spark, but not in the right places

Tom, will coils go bad from not being used? As soon as I can get a good coil I will try it. Are all 6 volt coils the same or do I need one from one of our vendors? By the way, the grandson cannot believe that smarter people than grampa , from all over the country can help get this thing running.

spark, but not in the right places

Why am I not getting spark from the coil wire to a head bolt? with the key on, 6.25 volts on each side of the coil. We may just take the distributor out and clean everything as Tom suggested.

spark, but not in the right places

We cleaned the points. No different than before. Good spark opening and closing points with my finger. 6.25 on both sides of amp gauge and both sides of coil with key on. Grandson is learning troubleshooting and how to scratch his head in frustration.

spark, but not in the right places

Car has been setting for about 6 years. Grandson and I have been working on it and now trying to start it. If I open and close the points with my finger, spark every time. When I turn the key on and crank it with the starter, it sparks once and that is all. No spark when we hold the coil wire...

So is there a way to get the fingers all at an equal distance?

    pressure plate fingers

On a lightened flywheel with a v8 clutch, can the fingers on the pressure plate be adjusted? The one I'm about to put in, the fingers are not the same distance from the flywheel. I don't see where they can be adjusted. Am I looking at this wrong? I do not want clutch chatter when I put this...

    exhaust manifold

OK, I am going to get a new exhaust and intake manifold like Mitch suggested. My question is, what gasket do I get and should I use the gland rings in the exhaust ports?

    exhaust manifold leak

I just checked the Les Andrews book and the torque is 45 ft. lbs. I am not using the rings because I don't know how much was taken off to true the manifolds and I didn't want them to be to thick and hold the manifolds out. I think I will try Bill's trick and see how that works. Thanks to all for...

    exhaust manifold leak

My exhaust manifold is leaking around #1 and #4. I hade the manifolds resurfaced but cannot get it to seal. I am using the one piece gasket snugged down to 45 pounds. Is there a better gasket I should be using? Thanks for any help.

    Starting Difficulty

Do you have a fuse in the system? I have seen them get loose at the rivets and not make good contact. Bypass this system and see if it runs better.

Rust under body belt line on '31 Tudor

If you look at a lot of cars up close you will see this very problem. Some with rough paint, to blisters. to rust starting in that area. Wax and dirt get in the joint between the belt line and body panel. Very close attention to detail must be followed to get this dirt and wax out of this seam...
