Talked with the seller quite a bit yesterday and he said the transmission was overhauled a year ago mainly to stop leaks. He noted that he usually drives the car only at 35 or 40 mph. My 51 would cruise comfortably at 55 -60. This seems like a red flag.

I have a friend who was having trouble finding the dimple on the timing gear with the probe. He had a Harbor Freight cheap borescope or whatever they are called. Put the probe end in the timing hole and watched the screen till he had the dimple perfectly centered. I have never had a problem...

The Hobby Aire works great and no maintenance. The only down side is you must get use to dragging the extra hose around. Its definitely worth it to avoid breathing the fumes especially from the two part paints. I use the just the half mask with no problems.

Ron I really do not think that cam affects idle very much. As I mentioned I have a Bubba Chevy distributor (8BA) with only mechanical advance. I started setting the timing with the pointer right on the dimple which is about 2 or 4 degrees BTDC (depends on who you ask). Then slowly advanced...

I have a very similar setup to your engine but with original heads milled .050, 94 carb and an all mechanical chevy distributor (Bubba's). Mine will idle at 450 with no problem. I do have quite a bit of initial advance setin which seems to smooth out the idle. No pinging while driving. Bill
