    Why I built a Flathead

That was just about all she wrote for you! Did you plant it into the boat to stop? No worries, I'll have brakes. Some of these knuckleheads don't know how to share the road when they're on dirt. An accident could be completely their fault and the Cops here would side with whoever looks like...

    Why I built a Flathead

I remember a 1981(I think) Suzuki Samurai had a divorced T-case and I've heard tell that an early K5 Blazer had one. I don't know what other vehicles to look at though. In time we'll have something or other. For now as you said, start with the rolling engine stand. That'll keep me busy and I...

    Why I built a Flathead

I kinda like it myself. Bastardizing is a way of life for me. Somewhere along the way I started getting a kick out of mashing unrelated things together and ending up with something that works. I think it's tons better than those glorified golf cart UTVs that everyone else is getting. If I can...

    Why I built a Flathead

I wouldn't mind that a bit! This thing is probably never going to see asphalt, just bebopping around the dirt roads on the Mountain. For now I have that Beetle body and I kind of figured if I do it right it might look like a 1950 Plymouth fastback if I do the front end right and you squint...

    Why I built a Flathead

That's all I've done so far. It only has 5-10 minutes of run time on it just to make sure it's going to run and hold temp and behave for me.

    WTB 8BA transmission

I'm looking for a transmission to bolt up to my 8BA. I'll even take the heavy truck trans. I'd like to have the yoke and if possible a stub of driveshaft on it as well so I can splice it to an IH Scout driveshaft. If you have a used but serviceable friction plate and a throwout bearing that...

    Covid excuse to play hookey

This build is awesome and I love that you're putting it to work. Thanks for the turn on!

    Why I built a Flathead

There's things about the truck transmission that I like. That granny gear being one of them and the brake right on the tail stock. I could get a truck trans for $100. Even a side shift trans would be $300. A top shift trans is way out of range for me. I blew my wad just getting this engine...

    Why I built a Flathead

Here's the guy who did it. http://www.extonautomachine.com/ He's got some kind of wild *** dragster and I think he said it's about $1500 for one shot down the strip. He's still got all the old knowledge and gear for doing valve seats and anything else you like on these engines and you could...

    Why I built a Flathead

The 2X4 sounds like the better way to go. I could get the truck transmission but it's not what I want when the time comes for this to be mobile. When you lever up against the flywheel, I assume you're going to the face of it right where the friction plate rides. I'm guessing you've never had any...

    Why I built a Flathead

Ok, I remember reading about that. Excessive running with no load isn't good for your cylinder walls. I don't know either way but it seems loading the engine or otherwise running it under real world conditions is the best way. I want to do the block sealer stuff and make sure this engine is...

    Why I built a Flathead

If a Shoebox came up in any kind of shape that I could afford, I wouldn't mind it a bit. My Uncle had a 49 Merc. He said that was his "Tail gettin car". My Dad had a 51 Ford Custom Deluxe or maybe a Customline(???) and I remember it from when I was about 4 years old.

    Why I built a Flathead

This is something that he really wanted. He kept looking half heartedly after the first engine but it just didn't pan out. I'll check that out.

    Why I built a Flathead

I have yet to do the block sealer that the Machinist recommended. It says to drive it for a few hundred miles so I figure a few hours on the bench will have to do. I'll have lots of time to hear that sweet song! I'll be checking for water in the oil periodically during the run. I'm curious if...

    Why I built a Flathead

Right now all I have is an IH Scout 800 roller chassis. It's going to get mounted to that. I figure a guy could do worse. I'm not trying to do some Rat Rod BS, I just want to drive my Flathead but I don't have much for money. Later down the road if I can find something worth putting this engine...

    Why I built a Flathead

I guess I got super lucky then. The Devcon block came with a good truck pan.

    Why I built a Flathead

Yea, I had a lot to learn. Still, if Jensen magged it properly he'd have found the crack. Exton found it with a mag flux rig. But it might be better this way. If Jensen had found the crack I might have written it off as junk. If the Devcon and the block sealer I have yet to run doesn't hold, I...

    Why I built a Flathead

Yep, I went with the Dev Con block. By the time he found the crack, he had done a lot of work on it and he was confident with it so long as I mind my p's and q's.

    Why I built a Flathead

Long read, settle in. Nothing really important... About 10 years ago, my late Father bought a Flathead. It might have been a Merc but I'm not sure. We opened it up and there were cracks all over on the pan rails. He sold off the block and internals, probably at a loss, and that was the end of...

    "Aluminum radiators are no good"...???

I bought a used radiator off E-bay. It arrived full of junk in the tanks. As I was rinsing it out I saw a pisshole. I tried to clean it up for soldering and the tube was fragile. I'm not sure what happened but all the tubes are really weak.
