First (second really) 5 main aluminum block.

Fabulous work! I’d love to be a fly on the wall in your shop as I’ve always been fascinated by pattern making

    Mutant B Carb

Allis Chalmers used these carburetors on their early model WC tractors. They had a slightly smaller venturi and did not have the GAV or high speed enrichment circuits that the Ford B used.

    Carburetor icing?

Upside down?? Not this boy!! Gravity is your friend with an A! (gotta keep oil in the dipper tray somehow!!) Mr. Pietenpol wrote that the A carb was fine in the air as long as you kept it warm, but it tended to load up and run poorly when bouncing along on the ground (as most A drivers with...

    Carburetor icing?

Kind of off topic, but maybe someone here will find it interesting: If the carburetor and intake manifold is separated from the exhaust manifold by much distance for some reason (like a Pietenpol aircraft engine conversion) the A engine becomes a carburetor ice monster. For this reason most Ford...

    Need combustion chamber volume's

I thought about posting the mathematical answer that Eystein posted, but took the lazy way out after going through the math. The only thing I would like to add to that post is that the head gasket volume (more than you might think), Valve head volume (enough to make a little difference), and...

    Need combustion chamber volume's

A lot depends on how much your pistons hang out above the block, as well as the bore (oversize) of your block, but a combustion chamber volume of about 150cc's should get you close to 6:1.

    l pump modification

Vertically. Making the intake wider will reduce flow due to increased leakage around the gears.

    Timing gear backlash

I'm working on assembling an engine now, and I just checked mine from the side with a dial indicator as Patrick suggested, although I checked it every 90 degrees at the crankshaft for two turns. Using a new aluminum cam gear from one of the regular suppliers on a new Stipe cam (runs nice and...

    Model B adjustable Lifters ?

I would be interested in a set of non adjustable B lifters if anyone has some available. Please send me a PM or call me at Five Four Zero-Three Two Five-One Four Zero Six if you can help.

    Modern Valve Guides

Thanks! The only spec I could find from a Ford source was in the Model T service manual which specified something ridiculously low like 24-28 lbs when compressed to "valve closed" height. Even 34-38 seems low to me though... I guess I've been messing with too much "modern stuff" (early 40's...

    Modern Valve Guides

Ron: I'm sure that performance and reliability would be affected by less spring tension. I've seen lots of numbers thrown around for seat pressure, but I haven't seen or heard anything about what Ford recommended. The service bulletins aren't much help, can anyone give a definitive spring...

Crankshafts: How straight is straight enough?

Chris: Thanks for posting. What you say makes quite a bit of sense, and I feel that you have revealed something that I was holding out on! Before setting the crank up on V blocks, I tried putting it between centers in the lathe to see if I could indicate it there, but I quickly found that the...

Crankshafts: How straight is straight enough?

Herm: Thanks for the tip. I will check with them. George: I thought about that too, but what concerns me is that the oil clearance should be less than half of what I have for runout at the center main (assuming .0015 or so clearance). I added that tidbit to the fact that many A's have...

Crankshafts: How straight is straight enough?

I'm beginning to think that poor crankshaft grinding jobs are the real reason that poured babbitt bearings have gotten a bad name in recent years... This engine is going to end up on the custom side of things, and I'd like to keep the build in house, otherwise I'd send it to one of the...

Crankshafts: How straight is straight enough?

Brent: I haven't asked them about it yet, as I wanted to have a spec in hand before calling them. I am also doubtful that it can be straightened to run correctly. It looks like I'm probably going to be looking for a crank or a bearing job in the near future...

Crankshafts: How straight is straight enough?

Kevin: Thanks for your help, I'll have to get a copy of that book! I was so distraught over the center main "jumping rope" that I didn't check the flange runout. At this point, it's kind of moot, as the crank would need to be straightened before use anyway (?). Anyone know of a good shop for...

Crankshafts: How straight is straight enough?

I've been working on getting parts together to build up an A engine, and I have a crank that has been ground .010 undersize on all journals, and a block with fresh babbitt to match. Things seemed a little snug when torqued, so I pulled the crank out to check it over. The journals are fine...
