Good point that Ross brings up. First I would open (loosen) the line where it goes into the master cylinder and slowly push the pedal down. Let it up slowly after tightening the line. If that doesn’t, get a helper to pump it really fast and hold it down while you loosen the line at the master...

I use AMSOIL 10-40 with zink in my 51 F1. Also in my MGB. I hardly ever have to add, no leaks, no smoke. At first you may find it will use oil and gradually quit. It will make your engine run slightly cooler. I like it because I don’t have to change oil so often.

You are fine the way it is. Once it’s filled to the bottom of the fill plugs you’re good to go.

It was a fine ride. Glad you turned the heater on when you did. I was getting cold!

1951 F1. 8RT, same as 8BA just lower compression. I run the stock gage of the left side and an electric universal gage off the right side. don’t remember what thermostat I put in it 21 years ago but on 100 degree days it stays below 180. Have been considering going to 180 thermostats. May help...

I did a cylinder head replacement on a ‘35 Ford with an 8BA with a GM steering box and a pump mounted over the left cylinder head between the two center spark plugs and run by a belt off the rear of the generator. Some old Chrysler cars had the P.S. pump on the back of the generator. I believe...

After Jseery’s post that reminds me of the time I drained everything on my Ford Aerostar. I put gear oil in the five speed transmission. The next day I had a hell of a time shifting it. I looked up the specs and it said to use ATF! I changed it to ATF and it was just fine for the rest of the...

Are you tapping on the pistons to move them in the bore without the rings on them?

A few years before Mr. Mitchel died he told me he ran one in his 3/4 ton Ford pickup with 390 engine with no problems. They should easily take what little abuse a model A engine can give them.

I put Coca Cola in a couple of dishes under my walnut tree. No more rats or mice since. Coca Cola won’t hurt dogs or cats since they can burp.

David J says he uses 140 in everything. I checked the weather there last month and it was -20f three times when I checked. My brother lives in St Croix Falls. When I lived in River Falls I bought a ‘46 V8 off a used car lot when it was around 20 below zero. After about 50 moles that day the rear...

I had horrible vapor lock problems on my ‘46 V8. Especially in stop and go traffic on hot days. I went back to single exhaust and never had the problem again. This week I am installing a new gas line on a ‘46 Mercury with dual exhaust system. The fuel line was two inches from the left exhaust...

I’ve often wondered about that too. I don’t see why not. Just to be safe I use something more like 75/140 in my old transmissions. In souther CA straight 140 should be ok but I think back in the day 90 was used in warm weather and 80 in winter time in cold climates.

I have seen many cars run just fine with the fuel pump leaking gas into the crankcase. After changing the fuel pump and oil and filter you should change the oil again after a few minutes of running. I have also known of new car dealers telling the customer that the gas in the oil is caused by a...

Re: Extended warrantee I get that stupid call too. About twice a month. Sometimes I play along. They don’t want to hear about cars with over 100,000 miles. My wife’s car has 277 thousand. My daily driver (MGB) is a ‘73. My Sunday car is a 1948 Nash. They don’t wait for me to tell them about the...

I just pulled a cast iron pulley off the engine in a ‘46 Mercury. Double pulley, wide belt.

Coils? There’s gotta be a radiator shop somewhere near you. Ask an auto repair or dealer where one is.

GeneF, you’ve never been to California? People will do it here just because they hate that some guy like you drive 3 or 4 hundred thousand dollar car that you have to have all the parts custom made (machined) and that you must be a drug dealer to afford it. Been there, done that. I only drive...

The first Pietenpol had model T engines. There is one in a museum somewhere. There is one in an airplane museum in the Morgan Hill, Ca. Area with a model B engine. I have seen it several times.

Ya, they’re still out there but most belong to hoarder. They are waiting for the value to go up to some unreasonable amount. In the mean time some are rusting away. I started restoration on a ‘39 panel truck. The owner found a ‘38 to use for parts that we decided to restore also. Once we got...
