    Ignition timing question

I had my distributor out for a rebuild with new shaft etc. Put the dizzy back in, front piston at TDC, timing pin on dimple seemingly. Used the NuRex timing pin 3 turns etc per directions. Ignition retarded, and Tudor starts back up. Advance timing and the engine speed drops.....didn't...

    engine slows when advance timing

Start the engine, slowly take the choke off and let it warm a bit, slowly advance timing from full retard to moderate advance.....and the idle speed starts to slow down and almost die out. Retard the timing lever and the idle smooths back out. Any thoughts on why that might be?

    distributor swap out question

My 12v 1931 Tudor had a distributor that lost spark. I swapped it out with a spare distributor, and have spark again, (cranking with the plugs removed) but the distributor cam lock nut on the spare distributor won't budge and am gonna have to drill it out. I would like to see if the engine...

    Model A produce trucks

I remember when I was a lil kid, around 1950, that the downtown Market Square in Knoxville, Tennessee had a long row of Model A pickups loaded with vegetable produce and maybe flowers in the truck beds for sale. Anyone else remember something similar?

    Distributor spark plug connectors

The 1928-1929 cars apparently used a "straight" spark plug connector from the distributor to the spark plugs. Then for the 1930-1931 cars an "offset end" type spark plug connector was used. Is one better than the other in anyone's opinion? Or, in essence, is one preferable? My Tudor is a...

    Rotor position at TDC

I swapped out the distributor on my '31 Tudor 12v engine. Next I was gonna set the timing using the Nu-Rex tool. I am visibly at TDC on #1 piston and get a slight motion on the timing pin against the timing gear but it does not readily go into the timing gear hole. I assume the timing pin is...

good spark at plugs but no Henry jiggle

My '31 Tudor with 12v negative ground is not starting. Cranks fine though. I've got a good strong spark on a grounded spark plug when cranking the engine, but no deflection of the ammeter when turning the ignition switch on or when cranking the engine. Does that tell something maybe?

    fuel shelf life in tank

Is there a good rule of thumb as to how long ethanol free gas is still usable when contained in a Model A fuel tank? In other words, how long would the fuel still be usable without having to drain the tank.

    Blocking manifold heater tube

My '31 Tudor obviously had an exhaust manifold heater at one time. Any good suggestions on how best to block off the 2" diameter heater tube coming thru the firewall? Thanks!

    Original Ford wrench question

I've got a couple original Model A combo wrenches and not sure what is their typical on-car usage. One has a 15/16" open end and the other has a 1-3/16" open end. Any thoughts?

    spark plug recommendation needed

I've been running Autolite 3076 spark plugs but they are too cold a heat range for my usage. The hotter Autolite 3077 is no longer available. Does anyone have a recommendation for a slightly hotter plug from another manufacturer. Thx!

    distributor drop in problem

My 1931 Tudor has lost spark so I pulled the distributor to swap it out with two other dizzies I've got to see if that would solve the "no spark" problem. The original distributor is out now, and I removed the dizzy anti-rotation lock in pin on side of the head, but none of the three dizzies...

    Russian distributor

I have a distributor that has been labeled with a piece of tape as "Russian distributor". It has the condenser in the original lower body of the unit (not on top plate) and looks similar or identical to me as a standard Ford USA dizzy. Does any one know or have a guess as to any differences...

    Tudor lost spark

My '31 Tudor was idling great in the driveway and then shutdown. It cranks fine but now has lost spark. I am running 12v negative ground. As a start, I pulled the distributor to replace with possibly one of the two spare dizzies I've got as a first diagnosis. I am running the two piece...

    12V Model A lost spark

My 12V negative ground 1931 Tudor lost spark while hot idling in my drive. It had been a reliable touring car for years before I bought it. It was running great, but shut down suddenly while idling. I've pulled plug leads and used a new plug to ground but have lost spark while cranking...

Which cylinder head do I have

I see there is the stock 4.22 compression head, the 5.22 police head and a 5.5 aftermarket head and others too. Is there any way to tell which compression cylinder head I've got while it's still on the car? Specifically from an external appearance perspective, without pulling the plugs and...

    Painting whitewalls black

My 1931 all black Tudor came to me with whitewall tires and almost white cream colored wheels. It also has dual fender mounted whitewall spares. I am contemplating using tire black on the whitewalls to kinda tone the overall contrast and and give the car a more period look. I am surmising...

    Under the running board mat

My '31 Tudor is basically a rust free survivor car but was used as a tourer in recent decades. I view it as a nice fair weather driver, but not trying to win any shows with it though. The running board rubber mat appears to be basically held down by the shoe mud scraping plate on top of the...
