    Jack stands

Here are a couple photos of Model A era jack stands that were purchased by my grandfather. They've been in use by my family for 4 generations. I decided to clean them up a bit and retire them. Brass tag reads 'Walker Rigid Rack Auto Support 791'

    chirp, chirp, chirp - Update

The last time I started my A, this is the sound coming from my engine at idle (best way to describe it). Rhythmic and intermittent. Stops, then starts again as throttle increases. At first I thought it was coming from the water pump. Now, I don't think so. Maybe a manifold leak? I'll let you...

Sunday evening joy ride - follow-up

Yesterday I went for a 25 mile ride. The last 5 miles was 4 lane road and I cruised along at 45 mph. Car ran great. Pulled up to the garage, let it idle with the e-brake on (slight uphill grade) while I got out and opened the garage door. By the time the door was open the engine stopped...

    Battery posts

I'm aware that the positive and negative posts on batteries are different diameters. Positive is larger than negative. This causes a slight problem with positive ground systems. Battery cable clamps are sized for the more common negative ground system. On to my experience today; came out of...

    Compression test - cylinder head

My compression test results: 85,86,86,89 (psi) I notice others post numbers in the 50's. Does that mean I have an other than stock cylinder head? It's not aluminum. I have a '30 engine (stock, as far as I know) in a '29 Tudor.

    Paint stripper

What brand paint stripper is best? 50 year old paint. Seems immune to "aircraft stripper".

    A little engine dress up

I like shiny brass. Wish there was more on my A. I split a 1-1/2" dia. brass sink tailpiece and put it over my oil fill tube. Fits perfectly. Makes me smile when I check my oil.

    Engine knock

Stock '30 engine. My engine is quiet with the spark advance fully retarded, at idle. When I advance the spark about 1/2 way down I hear a knock. I'm getting ready to drop the oil pan. What is most likely out of tolerance, rods or main bearings?

    New water outlet neck installed

'29 Tudor, '30 engine with the longer (higher) water outlet neck. I bought a shorter water neck for appearance sake to get rid of the crooked hose. Here's how the install went: Drained all coolant from engine. Removed long water neck. Trued the flange of the new neck with abrasive paper...

    Mystery Fuel/Carb Problem

'29 Tudor, '30 engine (stock), Zenith carb (new from Snyder's with 400+/- miles on it). I needed a new muffler. Ordered one from Aries. Decided to also replace the manifold gasket. Removed the carb, stored it upright. Removed the manifolds. Several days later assembled manifolds and mounted...

    Spark plug interpretation

What do my spark plugs tell you? ChampionW16Y. I use 87 octane unleaded with 4 oz MMO per 10 gallons. Electrode is light gray, in case the photo colors don't show correctly on your screen.

    Cylinder head washers

'29 Tudor with a '30 engine. I decided to replace the '30 water outlet neck with the correct '29 (shorter) neck to make the water hose "look better". The washers under the nut are thin, and in the removal process were deformed in my efforts. My question: Are these special washers or...

    Transmission Front Seal Kit

Installed this kit from Snyder's today p/n A-7112-S. The instructions didn't say you had to be ambidextrous and have long, thin, strong fingers. Best tool combination for the bolts: 3/8" drive 5/8" socket, 3/8 male x 1/4" female adapter, 1/4" drive ratchet. Changed the grease fitting on the...

    Oil Pan Gasket advice

I'm preparing to drop my oil pan. The engine will remain in the car. I've read Frank Rosin's article "Leakless Pan Gasket" and have the adhesive/sealants he mentioned. Ordered my gasket set from Snyders, p/n A-6781-C. It has a label "Important ! These gaskets are self-sealing. Use of any...

    Speedometer/odometer/trip meter

Everything works on mine except the trip meter. The reset shaft won't push in and the trip meter doesn't advance. Is there a written procedure for fixing this anywhere or should I just leave it alone. BunnyC
