    Prestolite B Tank

Hi all, I've been away a while, sorry about that....... I'm about to swap an Acetylene B tank for my torch and wanted to see if anyone would want this tank. I'd need whatever it costs to buy another tank in exchange for this one. Or, I suppose another good tank would be fine as long as I can...

    Really really old Acetylene tank?

Hey guys, I just swapped my B tank out for a full one at Tractor Supply and look what they gave me. Is this as old as I think it is? The valve is offset, there's two plugs in the bottom of the tank and it says "Preso-Lite" on the side.

Grinding valve stem to increase lash?

I'm making an assumption here so please don't kill me if I'm a little off. I need to grind a few thousandths off of a valve stem on a small 8HP engine (Techumseh HMSK80) and I'm assuming it's similar to what gets done to an "A" in stock configuration. If this is done on the "A" what is the...

    Diode across coil?

Hey, Sorry, long time no post! Is there any reason we can't or shouldn't use a large diode across the coil instead of a capacitor across the points? If the capacitor is there merely to keep the points from burning I would think a diode could do a far better job and take up less room and last...

    1930s carburetor question

So I've noticed something with older carburetors, specifically the Zenith on our A as well as whatever fancy carb is on this supercharged Duesy. As heard in this video when the engine is revved and the carb is closed fast the engine stutters / misses. http://youtu.be/QOQFDxRPdWM?t=37s Is...

    Model A era tool?

Hey guys, long time no visit but it's finally time to start working on the "A" again! I'm hoping someone can tell me what this is other than the obvious (a drill press), and if it's from the "A" era or not. I suspect it may be but am not sure. I have a chance to pick it up but wanted opinions...

    10-30 screw thread?

Just curious if anyone has ever heard of a 10-30 screw thread used in the 1920s or 30s? Its definitely not 10-32 or 10-24.

    NOT FORD, but same period.

I'm posting this here as I think most people on the barn, are like me and find these videos facinating even though they had nothing to do with the "A" There are two videos, one showing many things GE was working on in 1933. And the second video showing quite a few steps in the process of...

    Different types of Sta-Bil

I recall many recommending using Marine Sta-Bil however I've noticed at least now, there are other versions of Sta-Bil which say they protect against ethanol problems. Is there any difference between these? I want to protect the "A" as well as lawn mowers \ snow blowers \ ATVs that do not...

    What was an "improved road"

Though this isn't directly related to "A"s I feel it is automotive history. On a 1903 map from my town I found the road we lived on is listed as an "improved road". Did that mean compacted stone? Concrete?

    Pressure washer on an "A"

I recently bought a pressure washer and am curious if its safe to use on an "A", or any car for that matter. Rated 2600PSI @ 3.0GPM. 6.5HP Honda GX200 engine. I have I think 5 nozzles though I don't remember most of the angles but I think one is 0 degree, 30 deg, 40deg, 60deg and I think...

    NOT "A" old houses.

Again I apologize for posting non "A" related things on the forum. Have had no luck in other forums and I know many many people on the Fordbarn are knowledgeable in things like this. I own an old house, but don't know how old it is as the towns records kind of stink. To give an idea of its...

Ford comment in Buster Keaton movie

I don't remember which movie it was right now but in one of the Buster Keaton movies there is a guy with his arm in a cast. Another guy asks him what happened and he responds "I BOUGHT A FORD!" and looks pissed. What was that about? Were Fords known for breaking arms more than other cars in...

    Fuel problems

Well I guess ethanol has hit me too. I went to get the "A" ready so the boss can take it to a few shows and as I feared its not running anything like it did when I put it away last fall. First time I tried to start it she fired right up and then stalled. This repeated quite a bit and then...

    Dehumidifiers?

I'm curious if anyone else has humidity problems where they store their tools and or "A" and if so how do you control it? I just started running a dehumidifier with a pump in my basement as I am concerned about my tools. Without the dehumidifier I was seeing around 85% RH down there. With...

    white lithium grease

Ok maybe its just me, or the brand of white lithium grease I bought but I'm not impressed. I've tried it on everything from door hinges, throttle linkages and last night tried it on my bench vise and I had the same problem on every application. It simply sits on the surface and stays there or...

    NOT "A". antique tool question

I'm going to hope no one gets upset over this post as some have in the past. I've warned it does not concern model As so people don't waste their time if they don't want to help friends. A close friend of mine has a very old bench grinder which he offered to give me. The grinder looks like a...

    cracking exhaust valves

I've always been told running an engine without an exhaust system of some sort can crack a valve. Here is a picture of a 1920s Wright J-5C Whirlwind aka R-790. Notice the short little exhaust pipes, or whatever you want to call them. Why weren't engines like this at risk for cracking valves...

    adjustable wrenches

While I realize an adjustable wrench isn't really the best tool I have a few on hand as they come in useful from time to time. What is the difference between autolocking and standard? Does the autolocking feature have any drawbacks?
