    Darkening original engine bolts...

I searched the Forum earlier today, looking for info about recreating the blackish, "Raven" finish on original engine bolts. Let me say that I am NOT building a "points car", but would like to come close to correct appearance. I saw some comments about cleaning the bolts ( de-grease...

Slightly O/T - storage of machinist's tools: mic's, dial indicators, etc.

I have a small number of outside micrometers, dial indicators, machinist's rules, etc. that I use once in a while to check-out engine parts. Most are Starrett, and in good condition, if a little old. I have two machinists' tool chests, one an old wooden one covered in black leatherette (c...

    Full-flow oil filter adaptation...

I have been looking at the full-flow oil filter kits that employ a redesigned valve cover, and a length of copper tube that slips inside the horizontal steel tube that supplies oil to the front section of the valve gallery. It seems that that copper tube just telescopes inside the steel supply...

    High-volume oil pump... advantages / disadvantages ?

Am thinking about upgrading to a high-volume oil pump for my rebuilt A engine. Will be a stocker, aside from modern valves and adjustable lifters. Might get a 5.5 head after it's well broken in. Car is fully stock '28 coupe, original rear, 21" tires, etc. I won't be thrashing this engine...

    Electrolytic de-rusting - engine block ?

Has anyone tried electrolytic de-rusting of a Ford engine block ? I assume doing so would not be good for any babbitt still in the block, but am also thinking it would help loosen / dissolve rust and scale in the water jackets ? Thanks, Frank

    Dipper Tray - swiss-cheese ?!

The saga continues... I have two A engines torn-down, both have dipper trays that are kind of eaten-up from crankcase acids. Both have holes in the dipper wells themselves, the less bad of the two has more of the baffles eaten-away. I could braze-up / patch the well holes, but not sure what...

Correct fillet radius for Model A crank journals ?

I seem to remember reading / hearing that when having a Model A crank re-ground, it is essential to maintain Ford's original spec for the fillet-radius on the rod and main bearing journals. Can someone provide that specification ? ( I can't seem to find it... :( ) Thanks ! Frank

Re-facing valve seats in block: seat angle ?

If refacing the valve seats in the block ( for new, Stainless valves, etc. ), is it worth-while to go for a 3-angle grind, or just stay with the original-style single-angle ? Block is a diamond-block with hardened seats on the exhausts. Thanks ! Frank

Bearing pour: factory or jobber ?

Here are some pics of the main bearings in an engine I'm working on... Do these look like factory pour, or a later jobber ? (Judging by the look of the groove and oil-hole on the upper rear main, I would think "Jobber" ?)

Crank and babbitt bearing wear question

I am continuing to check-out my diamond long-block. Today I mic'd the crank: main and rod journals. ( I mic'd at three different spots along each journal face, in both the vertical and horizontal axes, with the rod throws at TDC/BDC. So I got six measurements per journal.) The crank has a...

How to: remove wrist-pin from OEM Rod & Piston ?

I am going-over a "new" engine before dropping it into my car. I would like to separate the rod from the pistons - both are OEM Ford parts. The service manuals suggests heating the piston in boiling -water before installing the pin, now about for removal ? I would prefer not to damage...
