    48 Coupe- valve tick

I've read most of the posts on the subject of valve noise, but I haven't found the answer to this question yet. I would like to know what causes the tick sound you hear when a valve adjustment is slightly over the max, assuming everything else is working properly. Does the noise happen when...

48 Coupe-There's another old Ford on the road

Finally got her running and roadworthy. Am having the time of my life driving around town after all the work it took to get her going. Many thanks to the fine people on this forum for all the help along the way. Still lots to do but she's a driver.

    48 coupe- blowing condensers

Car was running fine. Quit running. I replaced the condenser. Started and ran for 20 seconds and blew that condenser and quit. Is my coil shorted?

    48 coupe- What are these?

Had the rear end apart, changed axles and and replaced rear brakes and emer brake cable. Everything went back together, no apparent problems. These little wire clips are still in the hardware tub I was keeping everything in. Can someone please tell me what these are and what they're used for...

I'm so tired- but so so happy

For several days I've been trying to get one of the rear hubs to come off. I have to remove them both in order to proceed with removing the rear axles and the ring gear assembly to replace a bad axle and put new seals in the bells. The first one came off easily. The other one WOULD NOT BUDGE...

48 coupe- car stance is not even all around

I raised the car today and put it up on four stands. The rear axle droops down about 1 1/ 2 inches on the driver side when the rear tires are up in the air. I guess this means the spring is weak on the left side. Is this common? Does it indicate it could have a broken spring?

48 Coupe B-4245 rear axle seals

In the green bible I see there is one B-4245 seal in each bell (left and right). Some kits have 3 seals. I cannot locate the third seal that I assume is for the pinion shaft. Can anyone tell me where the third seal goes and how to install it? I do not have the rear axle apart yet. Thank you.

Using a spring spreader and surviving

Gotta take the rear axles and bells apart. Plan on leaving the banjo and spring in the car. Never did this before. With the frame up on stands and the rear axle housing hanging down with the tires off the ground, I imagine the spring bowing together slightly when the weight of the car is off of...

Wedging clutch plate levers before clutch removal

I believe I saw a page from a service manual for a 1948 ford (59AB engine) saying to insert wooden wedges into the pressure plate levers to compress the clutch springs before removing the bolts in order to change the clutch disc. Is this necessary? If so, how do you pry the 3 clutch plate...

    engine install

I think I saw this question asked but can't find the thread, so I'll ask it again. I have the engine and trans out of my 48 coupe. Ready to put it back in. Should I put the trans in supported by a jack and then install the engine, or should I assemble the trans to the engine and put them in...

    48 coupe---This Thing Works !

I got this stud remover on Ebay because I couldn't get any of the head studs to budge. They're so tight, it's hard to imagine any other tool that would work as well, if at all. Mac tools are amongthe best in my opinion. I wouldn't trust a cheepie tool that looks like this one for fear it'd...

Pan gaskets with no holes for screws

First time putting a flat head together. The gasket set I bought has no holes for the pan screws. Has anyone used these gaskets before? I'm thinking I can poke a hole through the gasket after they are bonded on the block and just let the pan screws work their way down through the gasket...

    What is ring seat?

I know that when an engine breaks in, it is said that the rings seat. I believe it must be related to the bore surface smoothing out so the rings run against a smooth surface (not sure). I noticed carbon buildup in the piston ring grooves, mostly in the compression groove. Here's my question...

    Hastings ring set 533

I'm fitting the rings on the pistons on my 59AB engine. The Hastings 533 set is a 4 ring set. One of the oil rings is cast/slotted. The installation instructions are vague, but it appears that the 3 piece oil ring goes in the third groove and the cast/slotted ring goes in the bottom groove...

48 coupe- Marsden nuts, cotter pins or safety wires

I torqued the main cap nuts on my 59AB engine and tried to safety wire the two nuts on all three mains. Couldn't get a good result with either the steel wire I had or the stainless wire. Tried to follow the recommended safety wire procedure but the wire kept slipping over the top of the stud...

    8BA valve spring compressor

OK boys, I admit it. I'm stupid. I need to remove the keepers on my 8BA valve assemblies which are out of the engine. I also need to put them back together eventually so I'm looking for a tool to make life easier. I used a hammer and socket to remove the keepers from some OHV valves once...

Packing the oil pump with Vasoline

Would someone tell me how to pack it? Do you fill the pump with oil and then pack the holes full of Vasoline or push Vasoline into all the holes when the pump is drained of oil, or what is the procedure?

    Having a little trouble here

I'm trying to assemble the oil pick up screen into the oil pump assembly. Not sure how to put the retainer wire in. Afraid I might ruin it by forcing it down on top of the pick up screen trying to clip it in. Can someone explain how to do it? Thanks
