    clutch replacement

A friend of mine has a 28 coupe and is having clutch problems. He would like me to replace it when I get time. On my 33 v8, I would do it by taking the rear axle and transmission out, leaving the motor in. I haven't worked on a Model A much and was wondering if that would be a good way, or...

    speedometer gearing

The rear axle in my 33 has "11 - 39" stamped on the flange - a ratio of 3.54 to 1. I replaced the axle many years ago and I think the original was 4.11. (I wonder what the heck I did with that unit? Lost in the shuffle I guess). My speedometer "turtle" has 18 teeth which I think is not right -...

    1933 front shock mounting

Were the front shocks on a 33 V8 mounted on the inside or outside of the frame rails? My car has the two mounting holes plus a larger center hole which would make it seem like they would have been on the inside, but the exhaust is so close there. Thanks Jim S.

    41 merc front spring

My friend has a 41 Mercury with a sagging front spring. He doesn't have the internet and needs more information. 11A-5310 is evidently the part number for a Ford - is it the same for a Merc? He was considering having his spring "re-arched" by a local place that works on truck springs - have...

    ignition resistors

The ignition resistors on the early v8s seem to be sort of a mystery, at least to me. A lot of times the original ones are rusty and bad looking, but I've heard the modern replacements are not very good. The Mac catalog says their's is 40 ohm, which seems completly wrong to me. Any old ones I...

    33 running boards

I have a set of what I thought were original, slightly rusty running boards for a 33 - 34. The rubber covering was mostly gone and I scrapped the remaining old hard dried up stuff off. The pictures I found of other original ones had a series of holes punched in them for covering to grip on, I...

    41 merc heater

My friend's 41 Merc has a hot air heater and we were wondering if it is factory installed - dealer installed - or what. It certainly appears to be original and is a real nice unit. The exhaust pipe on the right side goes into a cast iron heat exchanger. There is a blower motor under the hood and...

    distributor question

A friend just bought a 41 Merc, but it has what we think is a 38 Ford truck engine in it. The distributor has an extra "coupling" between it and the camshaft. I saw one of these on a 37 truck engine too, and couldn't figure out why it was in there. Is this something only done on truck motors? Is...

    new made starter switches

The starter switch in my 33 V8 is worn out. I took it apart and the center post bottoms out before the copper strip hits the two buttons. I could fix it if I have to, but getting a new one would be easier for sure. I see Gaslight shows them, Mac's doesn't. Has anyone tried one of these new made...

    inner fender to grill attachment

I'm working on fixing up the front fenders on my 33 2 door sedan - cracks in the beads, don't fit right against the running boards, etc. In the course of trial fitting I have re-attached the inner fenders to the frame, leaving the bolts a little loose. It seems lilke the inner fenders can't be...

    32 coupe

There's an ad for a 32 5 window all original in the latest Hemmings - for $5500. I would think his phone lines are going to melt from all the calls. It's in Canada. Must be some sort of mistake.

    hood fitting questions

I have a 33 2 door sedan that I "restored" a long time ago (45 years or so), when I was young and didn't know much. Now I'm old and don't know much. Lately I've noticed the hood, grill, and front fenders don't really line up very well and the hood is hard to get latched at the front and rear. I...

fuel pump with a priming lever

I was at Road America today and someone had a hot rod with a flathead v8. The fuel pump had a lever to operate it without turning the motor over. It seems like that is a great idea, my 33 sits for weeks sometimes and I usually have to pour some gas down the carb to start it. Are these pumps...

    33 brake parts

I am working on the brakes on my 33, it's original with mechancal brakes. The levers on the rears are worn out - the holes for the pins are way big. I got them off and ordered new ones from Mac's - right out of their V8 book, part numbers A2235C and A2236C. They say 32 -34. I got them and they...
