Do early 1928 wheels interchange with other years?

Can the early 1928 wheels (left-hand emergency brake cars) be used on later Model A's? Can wheels from later Model A's be used on early 1928 hubs and drums? W. Michael

    metal valve stems. How tight?

When installing inner tubes with metal valve stems: 1. On the tube, how tight do you tighten the lock nut against the bridge washer? Just until the "squish" is gone? If it's not tight enough, I guess it will leak. If it's too tight, perhaps you could actually mash the tube out of the...

removing flame arrestor or filler screen

I need help removing the flame arrestor (gas filler screen) from my '29 Fordor. This is a completed car, not one under construction, so I must protect the paint, etc. and do this with the tank in the car. This is the threaded type flame arrestor, not the one with tabs. I bought the special...

Patina paint and Gibbs oil finish OT

I'm sorry this is a little off-topic, but I think the same answers may apply to a Model A finish. I am actually working on a '55 with original paint, but a good bit of surface rust--not a lot of paint left, but still some color visible. How do I apply an oil finish to this old paint? How much...

    Running alternator disconnected

If I run the car with alternator disconnected from the wiring harness, will it damage the alternator? I know that if I run a generator while disconnected (or if the cutout fails to close) it will damage the generator. I just don't know what it will do to an alternator. W. Michael

    Instrument panel light wiring

I have a 1931 coupe, round speedometer, instrument panel light under the dash rail with small armored cable. I do not have a pop-out switch--I have the Nurex replacement ignition switch that looks like a pop-out when mounted. Ignition switch has two terminals on the back. I know the...

    cracked head

Can I use this head? It is cracked between the stud hole and the water jacket, but it does not appear to be into the combustion chamber. This is the stud on the driver's side between cylinders #2 and #3. I know you wouldn't use this on a customer's car, or on a total rebuild, but I am using...

oil pan to rear main cork gasket

I am preparing to drop the oil pan to clean it. Les Andrews says (p. 1-135) to soak the rear main cork gasket in WATER for 24 hours. This is surprising to me, as I thought I should keep all water away from this area of engine assembly. I just wanted to make sure I should do this before...

    Radiator clips for wiring harness

Does anyone have a good clear picture of the clips that hold the headlight wiring on the back of the radiator? I need a good picture to show to my local radiator guru. What are the measurements on these clips? I have checked the judging standard, Les Andrews' book, and the suppliers'...

    battery cable--what guage?

I need a new cable from the battery to the starter, 6 volt. I don't understand the numbering system for the wire guage for these cables. 1. Is this the correct order, for the largest to the smallest? #1 0 00 000 etc. 2. Is 2/0 the same as 00 ? 3. Snyder's has the cable, 2/0. Material not...

One thing leads to another and another . . .

It began so simply. I needed a new battery in the coupe. Then I read the threads about making sure the battery was properly secured with hold-downs and the floorboards were properly screwed down to keep everything in place in case of a rollover. I've had a model A since 1964, and I've never...

    Measuring stick for gas tank?

My gas gauge float has sunk to the bottom of the tank (again) and I'm not really in the mood to replace it until warmer weather. I would like to mark a stick (like a paint paddle) to manually measure the gasoline. I know I could drain the tank, add one gallon of gas at a time, mark the stick...
