Simple test for both condenser and coil

A few years ago I read about this test. Fiddle with the points to get a bright blue high voltage spark at least 1/4” long. Leave the the key on and the points closed or shorted. How long do I wait before checking the spark again? If the spark is the same then the coil and condenser are good. TIA Ian

How to take apart a starter switch

Twice this summer my starter switch stuck in the on position. Fortunately I have a kill switch. I now want to install an insulator kit (A-11450-X). I removed the switch but I cannot get it apart without deforming the copper terminal. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Tudor front seats

I just bought the new pins that position the seat 2” further back. I forgot that I installed seat belts many years ago. With difficulty I was only just able to make everything fit. Hope this saves someone else from this problem.

    Zenith B carb power tube

I had a little accident while painting the carb and now I have a damaged power tube. It’s almost broken off where its pressed into the upper part of the carb. Here’s my question: does the tube really have to extend down 1 1/2” to work properly? This puts the end 7/8” below the gas level.

    Coil test, how long?

I read about a coil test that involves getting a bright blue spark from the secondary wire, then leaving the key on and points closed and doing it again. How long do I wait between the two observations?

    Distributor dilemma

Spring is here and I went to start the car. I always clean the points to begin with. Next I shorted the points with a screw driver and got a bright blue 1/2” spark from the high voltage wire. Put everything back together then got in the car, turned on the gas and hit the starter. Starter worked...

A friend saves these packages and puts them in the screen in his model a gas tank over the winter. I did a google search and found that kitty litter is the same chemical. I would appreciate any comments. Thanks, Ian

    Gas damage on rubber

I accidentally got gasoline on my running board and didn’t notice until the next day. The rubber is now blistered or wavy. Can the damage be repaired? It’s not where it will be stepped on. Thanks, Ian

    spark plug caps

Hi all, I was just looking at a Restoration Supply Co. catalog and noticed something called “spark plug caps”. I must admit I like the look of 3X and other vintage brass capped spark plugs. Anybody ever use these to dress up modern replacement plugs? What are your thoughts? Thanks, Ian

    Clutch shudder and horseshoe shims

I recently replaced my clutch when I could no longer shift without grinding the gears. I assumed my problem was a spring slipping out of place on the clutch disk. What I found was a broken rivet. I got a new disk and reassembled the whole clutch assembly with one difference; I measured the gap...

    Transmission tower spring removal

Hello barners, a friend has loaned me a tool to remove the shifter spring. This is the one all the vendors sell and Les Andrew describes. Can it be used with the forks in place ?I’m only familiar with the tool made from steel tubing which can be used with the shifter forks in place.

Hi all, my local club had a vehicle inspection day today and we were unsure how to distinguish between tempered glass and plate glass. Laminated glass was no problem of course. Any suggestions?

    Diamond B i.d.

I know this is unimportant but I'm curious. The engine in my car is a model B. It has the small diamond in the casting but there is no date code. Is this common?

    Grinding gears

I've been having trouble lately shifting gears quietly. I figured a little adjustment of the clutch release arm was all that was required, it's always worked before and I had more than enough free play. This time it was different, after several adjustments of 1/2 turn the problem is still there...

    Repro Gear shift lever

I know from other members in my club and also fordbarn that not all shifters are the same quality. Who sells the best? Judging standards do not matter to me. TIA, Ian

    Oiling springs

I just put good rebuilt shocks on the front of my car and then oiled the spring with oil from the crankcase. A friend questioned my choice of oil. I thought I read that here on fordbarn but now I can't find it. Did I just screw up?
