    Engine Popping Sound

I am experiencing frequent “popping” sounds on my ‘30 A the same as described in Mr. Chauvin’s response to another earlier inquiry as shown below: My timing checks OK. My questions are: 1. I presume that Marvel Mystery Oil would be preferable to Liquid Wrench? 2. How much Marvel Mystery Oil...

    Tight Bearings

I haven't posted a question for several years but this is now my third post in as many weeks.Have received some good help from the members. My 1930 roadster was getting a wee bit noisy so I pulled the engine and tightened up the main and conn rod bearings to what I thought was between .001 and...

    Pan gaskets

Just getting ready to put the oil pan back on after bearing "tune-up". I am using the rope type crank pulley gaskets. Three questions: a) Which is best - paper or cork side gaskets? b) Are the side gaskets meant to go over the top of, or be cut around the protrusion of the front rope...

    Front crank seal

Just getting my car re-assembled after adjusting main and conn rod bearings. Was considering replacing the original rope type front crank seal with a modern neoprene seal from Snyders. Your comments would be appreciated. Thank you. George

    Restoring crank and rod bearings

In the past I recollect restorers using two kinds of powder (one course and the other finer for finishing) which when mixed with oil were used to restore bearing journals. Prussian Blue was used to measure progress. One of the powders was color yellow. Apparently the abrasive qualities...

    Main bearing bolts

I will soon be replacing the main bearing bolts in my model A. I see that the grade 8 bolt set sold by Snyders comes with cushioned washers. Can I still torque up to 90 lb. without problems ? Any comments? Thank you, George

    Wrist pin check

I am experiencing some knocking in the engine. I am going to drop the pan and check mains and rod bearing clearances etc. Can I just wiggle the rods to get a feel for wrist pin clearances with the pistons in place? Thank you,

Differential oil leaks to drive shaft torque tube

I am adding 600w oil to the differential regularly which is apparently leaking into the drive shaft torque tube. From my knowledge and review of literature, there is no seal for stopping leakage through the differential pinion bearings until reaching the oil (grease) seal on the transmission...

    Pertronix coil

I read somewhere that the Pertronix 4011 (1.5 ohms) Flame-Thrower coil was the best coil available for the model A. I ordered one for my 6v positive ground "A" which arrived today. On the box it states: "1.5 ohm coils suitable for 8 cylinder engines; use a 3.0 ohm coils for 6 and 4 cylinder...

    Lower dist. shaft problem

While in a parade yesterday my electronic ignition failed (don't know why yet). I carry a fully timed original type spare dist. in my tool kit but couldn't install it for more than 3/4 of an hour due to not being able to get the top and bottom shafts to line up and engage. The dist. top shaft...

I was looking through my latest supplier catalogues but do not see the James Peterson voltage regulator (or other band type regulator listed). Have they been discontinued? Wondering what the story is here.

    Ring Gear

I am getting ready to replace a ring gear. I have reviewed the archives but still have two questions: 1. Rather than heat the existing ring gear to remove it, could I simply cut it in two places with an angle grinder? 2. I read an earlier post by Tom Endy on this subject. He has always...

    Sagging exhaust manifold

The exhaust manifold on my car is leaking. I have a spare one that shows the rear port sagging about 1/16 inch below the other three ports which are in-line. Is it worthwhile to sandblast, paint and install this unit or should I look somewhere else? Thank you.
