    Riveted universal joint worth keeping?

I was given this original riveted u-joint. It’s rust-free and the splines look good, but there is about .010” - .015” side play in a couple of the pins. OK or junk?

Best way to clean intake passages?

I’m in the middle of a valve replacement job and before I fit the new valves, I’d like to clean out the decades of black buildup in the intake passages. It’s black tarry stuff about 1/16” thick. Is there any chemical that would easily dissolve it? If not, what’s the best method? I have a small...

Found a number stamped on top of my block

I took my cylinder head off and found this number stamped on the block next to a cylinder. What do you suppose it is? Machine shop mark? I know the engine has been worked on sometime in the past because it has .080 oversize pistons.

Uh oh, found coolant in the rear intake

I took my manifold off today in order to check the valve clearance, and I found a bit of coolant in the rear intake port. I’m guessing I at least need a new head gasket?

How was this pocket ammeter used?

I came across this ammeter in my father-in-law's tool collection. He got it from his father who had a Model A back in the day. I did a quick search and found several for sale on eBay, mostly described as an "antique automotive tool." This one is missing a short electrical lead that attaches...

    Miniature flathead 4-cylinder

I just came across this Youtube video today, a working model of a flathead 4. The arrangement is very close to our Model A engine. Inspired by it, perhaps? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gugIj7TAZ2o

California 1935, Wilshire Blvd in color (remastered film)

You might have seen some of these remastered old films. This one is close to the Model A years, though I could spot only a few. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViNoQd4OaIo

Ever have a distributor rotor wear out?

I was doing a routine check of my points a couple weeks back and I noticed the rotor was wobbling on the cam. It looked like the shallow molded ribs on the ID that made it fit snugly on the cam had worn down. I got a new one and it fits like it should. The old one was only a few years old and...

    Why can't my generator move?

My generator is shown in the attached picture. The circled areas show where the generator housing nearly touches the engine at the top and the water pipe at the bottom. Right now everything works fine and the fan belt tension is good, but there is no adjustment possible if the belt wears...

    Non-A Sparton horn id help

I restored this horn over the winter. It’s a Sparton model AU dated 1923. I plan to use it on my speedster, I am curious if anyone knows which cars would have used it originally.

What's this tie rod used on?

I was given this tie rod recently. It is the right length for a Model A, and has Model A ends, but the diameter increases to 1 inch in the center. Heavy-duty truck?

I know 6 amps is a recommended charge rate for a 6 volt battery, but is it also good for a 12 volt battery?

    distributor body with two notches

I picked up this distributor body at a swap meet. I was looking at it the other day and noticed it has two alignment notches molded into it. One is at the correct spot, the other is 90 degrees away. What would be the purpose of the other notch?

Replacement generator terminal wire is way too stiff

I'm talking about the internal wire from the generator output brush to the terminal stud. The cloth insulation on my original wire was falling off and I was afraid of a short , so I ordered a new replacement. The gauge is correct, but the plastic insulation is way too rigid, so much so that it...

    generator assembly question

When assembling the generator, where does the un-insulated field coil wire (the one that connects the two halves of the coil) go in relation to the long clamp bolt; between the bolt and the generator shell, or the other side with the insulator in between? Do you have to form a small "U" loop in...

    quick generator bench check

I have an old generator I'd like to refurbish. It needs a thorough cleaning and fresh paint, a new front bearing, one of the brush holder posts is loose, and the cloth wire insulation is flaking off, but it does spin freely. I didn't want to try testing it on my car because I was afraid it...

    Diode cutout conversion technical question

I'm planning to convert an old cutout I have with a diode. I have the instructions and it looks simple enough. My question is about the ready-made diode cutouts sold by the parts houses. Some of them say that the output current is "factory set to 5 amps." How is this done with a simple diode...

Off topic - interesting old tool

My father-in-law recently gave me a collection of old tools that were once used by my wife's grandfather to maintain his cars (which at one point included a model A.) In addition to the usual assortment of common wrenches, pliers, and screwdrivers there was the combination wrench shown in the...
