    Update on burning points.

Just thought I would update my thread about burnt points and hard starting. I reversed the coil connections, installed a Japanese-made 0.022mf condenser, a set of USA made points, set them at 16thou and installed the dissy. Roared into life on the first crank of the starter (after sitting for...

    Burning points??

My crab dissy was built by Bubbas and has done about 1,500 miles. Because it suddenly refused to start, I took it off the engine and found the right-hand pair (as viewed from the front of the car)of points were burnt and badly pitted. Now I know that Jim uses quality points, so I'm suspecting...

    Because y'all like pics....

My '47 engine, heads milled to 45 thou clearance, Bubba dissy, Drake pumps, 12v starter and gennie, 85 F150 O/D trans.

    Optimum caster angle?

What is the opinion of the Barners on an optimum caster angle? I've done a search and got wildly varying opinions, so I'd like to consolidate into one thread. Vehicle is AV8, 4" dropped axle, split bones, and the steering is quite heavy. I was aiming for 7 degrees when I built it, but the final...

    Rule of thumb ?

Generally speaking, when compression is raised on an otherwise stock engine, does the ignition need to be advanced, retarded, or stay where it is. I've done a search, but cant find anything on this.

    Charlie ny.

It's been said before, and I will say it again, because it bears repeating. I fitted my 94 today that was rebuilt by Charlie Schwendler, and the flathead has never run so well. I was all set to change to a 97 as the one I borrowed from a mate ran so well, but Charlie (and others) convinced me to...

    Holley vs Stromberg.

I've had a lot of trouble getting my C59A to run well. I rebuilt the Holley 94, completely dismantled and every orifice blown out, flatted the gasket surfaces, new gasket kit right through (even under the nozzles), leather plunger, new float, new 50 main jets, new power valve etc. Went out to a...

    High compression question.

Does high compression (155lbs) require a step hotter plug, or should a standard plug do the job? How about the distributor advance plate setting? More advance or less advance? This is a stock C59A with milled heads.

    Vacuum gauge reading.

Finally got a vacuum gauge hooked up, and it's giving a steady reading of about 6 at idle. According to the interweb, this is the symptom of an intake leak. I had a new gasket on it, and all intake bolts were tight, same for the carb to manifold. I have taken the intake off, and the gasket looks...

    A very perplexing problem.

My C59A engine feels like it's running on 7 and 1/2 cylinders. It's stock except heads milled for 45thou clearance over pistons, has had new rings, bearings, valve grind and valve guides, valves set to 10thou in and 14thou ex. New Best copper gaskets, dissy rebuilt by Bubbas (including...

    Very strange timing....

My C59A (stock except milled heads) runs best with the advance adjuster on the crab dissy pushed fully down as far as it will go, and feels like it would stand to go more if it were physically possible. If I run it at the centre mark or one mark down from centre, it is gutless and miss fires...

    The results.

We often see an enquiry about some problem, and often see the posts saying "let us know how it turns out" ........ and often that does not happen. I had a lot of noise coming from #5 cylinder and from the front of the engine in general (C59A), and when I pulled it apart I found a piston that was...

    Need a piston(s)

My C59A is in need of one 3 3/16 +45thou 3 ring piston. I have scoured the usual suppliers, and +40 or +60 is no problem, but +45 is like unobtanium. So.... I'm looking for suggestions. The rest of the engine is great, so I do not want to bore to +60. Any one have any ideas? Marty.

    Vexing problem.

I've been trying to find a knocking noise which is driving me nuts. I rebuilt my C59a engine about 9 months ago and gave it a hone, new rings, rod and main bearings, new valve guides and faced the valves. I had the heads milled to give me 50thou piston/chamber clearance, but otherwise is stock...

    Compression again.

I had the heads milled to give me 50thou clearance in the squelch area on my 59A engine. I reshaped the area to match the piston domes, put it together and ran a compression test. I discovered the left bank (5-8) was 10lbs average down on the right bank(1-4), so have swapped heads to see if it...

    81A heads?

What's the story with 81A heads when used on a 59A engine? Better chamber design? Higher compression? Do the valves clear, or do the chambers have to be cut?

    Info on Ford's 5T cams?

Does anyone have any knowledge of, or info on, Ford's 5T camshaft? I know it was a truck cam, and reputedly had a bit more torque at lower revs. I also know when I was a young 'un back in the 60s, that stock car guys here in New Zealand had to run stock engines, so they used a 5T cam to get a...

    Selecting a power valve?

I have rebuilt my Holley 94. Completely stripped, surfaced the mating surfaces, blown it all out with air, new leather accel pump, new quality gaskets, new 48 jets (the 50s made the plugs a bit sooty), stainless screws etc. On assembly, I had a choice of three power valves.... but none of them...

    Diagram of 94?

Does anyone have a link to an exploded view of a Holley 94, specifically from a '47 Ford? Also in the gasket kit from Vintage Speed is a grey felt ring, not really a gasket as such. Does this pertain to this carb? Thanks. Marty.

    Fuel pump pushrod?

What is the clearance with a fuel pump pushrod, and how long is the rod on a 59A engine please?
