    bearing insert identification help...

Hard times, To answer your original question, call Max Hermans at H&H and ask him. As indicated by the MAX in yellow letters on the crank counter weight H&H is the builder of the engine. That plus the fact the thrust is on the center main. Wm J.

Noise in my new 29 a engin

Post number 10 reminded me of when I bought a new plunger and spring I had a knock as you do and found the new spring was very weak. Put an original spring in and the knock was gone. Just a thought as the new springs may be stronger today.

    Why did I buy this?

John, you bought it to chase the tube threads in the rear main cap. Or to enlarge from the 5/16" tube in the 28 thru mid 30 cap.

    throw out bearing

My guess is you have a sheared pin on either the fork that moves the throwout bearing or the leaver that is moved by the pedal. Grab both and see if one or the other moves on the shaft.

    Original vs "modern" starter drive

Mike, I don't think this has ever been brought up on this site but the modern drives first imported from India by Snyders had the bevel or taper on the wrong side of the teeth. This will not only knock the ring gear off it will also damage the ring gear teeth. I bought 5 at the then price of...

    Does this look right?

No it is not covered on the A but was change on the B to cover. You just need to be sure the slinger was installed with a sealer like permatex A2 or the like.
