Maybe try shifting through all gears, then back into neutral. Carefully remove lever then carefully unbolt tower & lift straight up. Then see if it goes straight back down and lines up with bolt holes?

My experience has been that you can’t get the 2nd gear stack as tight on these early (‘32-38) mainshafts, even with NOS thrust washers. The thrust washers of different thickness (81A-7069 A & B) are for the later 81A synchro hub. It looks like you are shifting fully into 2nd & high - how...

Thanks for the pic - I think that looks correct. The lip on the sleeve goes to the front. The protruding part of the hub goes to the front, flat side to the back. I think that’s what you are showing. The synchro hub should slide freely on the mainshaft, when assembled it will move...

I can see in the pictures that you have the lip towards the front. In this picture it looks like you may have the front of the synchro hub aligned with the rear of the sleeve? https://www.fordbarn.com/attachments/587382/

Can’t tell from pics - is that a straight or slanted tower? Sorry, just read your original post which says 81A double detent tower…

Are you sure your synchro sleeve is a 48 and not a B?

Glad I could help. I have encountered just about every mishap you could possibly imagine - self inflicted & otherwise.

    34 trans help

Pics would be helpful. Are you using the early front retainer (original) or the later one with the seal (78)?

    34 trans help

I would remove the shift tower and make sure the synchro is moving freely - not hung up on the main drive gear or second gear cone. Put the slider in neutral and then see how it feels. Do you have gaskets at the front & rear retainers?

    34 trans help

Just to be sure - stock ‘34 transmission? Do you have the oil baffle on the main drive gear? The early synchro is not held by a snap ring and should slide back and forth easily about 1/8”. If it hangs up on the main shaft that can be a problem. We don’t put assembly grease on the brass...

    34 trans help

Can you wiggle the synchro back & forth a little? Sometimes the brass cone will grip the main drive gear enough to drag

    Identifying LZ gears

Common main drive gear tooth count is 15 or 16. LZ is 18 or 19. I use the oil hole for reference and can count this pretty quick. Common cluster is 28 or 29 (big end) and LZ is 25 or 26. Harder to count in a dirty, oily transmission. Rule of 44: 15/29, 16/28, 18/26, 19/25.

Need help with a G series 6 cylinder transmission

I am working on a G series 6 cylinder transmission and the case is bad in the thrust area. This is a top loader case - not a side loader. These seem more rare than a LZ transmission! Looking for leads on a replacement case or even a complete transmission for sale. Thanks, Will Kimble

Model A-B Float A motor fit.

Just took a look at the kit - it seems to say float-a-motors will work. Hopefully this is a link to show the different B flywheel housings: https://www.fordgarage.com/pages/flywheelhousings.htm Wondering if this might not be your problem?

Model A-B Float A motor fit.

Also I think there are 2 upper flywheel housings for Model Bs - a '32 version and a '33-34 version. '32 version would be more appropriate for the float-a-motor setup. Maybe part of your problem? Gotta pic of the side of the engine/trans?
