    Losing power on hills

Now it goes up hills, but doesn’t hot start. I drove it out to a celebratory lunch yesterday (lobster rolls and ice cream, what could be better?) and after the car heat-soaked in the parking lot, it wouldn’t restart. The pump wouldn’t prime and I had to refill the carb bowl by hand. That was...

    Losing power on hills

Problem solved! It was the fuel pump push rod. I drove past my house at full throttle and the engine sputtered, so I killed the engine, put the car in neutral and coasted into the garage. I took the top off the carb, and sure enough, the bowl was empty, right down to the top of the jets, so...

    Losing power on hills

I do have a Holley carb, the only settings I have seen are the idle and the summer/winter settings, I’ll have to check that I have that set correctly. And the fuel flex line is old and somewhat suspicious, although not obviously leaking. I will change it as a precaution.

    Losing power on hills

Lots of things to think about here. Fritz, when you say to adjust the carb, do you mean to change the jets? I have not been able to find any other adjustments to make it more lean. And Mart, I did just change the gas cap, if the new one is not vented, that would be hilarious. It also sounds...

    Losing power on hills

It does feel like fuel starvation. I took the hose off the carb and pressed the starter button and got a reasonable blast of fuel out of the fuel pump. Can I measure that to see if it is enough? Or if it looks like a lot, that isn’t the problem? It was enough to knock over the cup I aimed...

    Losing power on hills

I have a 40 Fordor, and it loses power under full throttle especially on a steep hill. I floor the accelerator, it accelerates well for 3-4 seconds and then the power cuts down drastically. Let off the pedal and you can do it again, but getting up a hill is a losing deal. 1/2 throttle is...

    Overvoltage

Update: I replaced the voltage regulator and I’m still having the over voltage problem. When I rev the engine, I can get the battery voltage to get up to 9v, which is obviously too high. When the engine is at idle, it comes down to 6.4v. I am reading the high voltage both on a digital...

    Overvoltage

It’s a 1940 deluxe with the original dash gauges, so the battery gauge shows voltage, and I’ve calibrated it with a digital volt meter. I don’t have anything as classy as the Simpson shown above. The gauge used to hang out just between red and orange, which was low 6’s, and when it pegs high...

    Overvoltage

It’s not the original, it says “Allstate” on the cover. I took the cover off and cleaned all the contacts, and it didn’t make any difference. I have a new one on order from Dennis Carpenter, we’ll see how that works.

    Overvoltage

Previously, I had never seen anything above the low 6’s and wondered how the battery stayed charged, now I’m seeing over 8. Sounds like it’s time to try a new regulator.

    Overvoltage

I took my ‘40 Deluxe out for a quick drive to try out the wheel alignment. After about 1/4 mile it started running really rough, lost most of its power and the battery gauge pegged high, and the coolant temp pegged low. (Oil and gas gauges were ok). I limped home, and in the garage, revving...

    seat belts 40 coupe

I’ve got a set of belts that were too short if anyone wants them. Definitely measure with rope, and don’t be too optimistic on how short you can get away with, and don’t forget to measure with different seat positions.

    Rear axle leaking

Hi Kube, thanks for the offer! I love your book by the way, it’s super useful. I highly recommend the mug. Here it is on Zazzle. There is nothing like a friendly hippo with a hammer to make you feel like you are making good decisions...

    Rear axle leaking

Thanks for the info! I’ve learned a lot this morning. I had not heard of the Motors auto repair manual, I’m going to buy one. I read the old thread, I’m going to take Kube’s advice there and do the whole job, not use a quick-fix seal. He says it’s not that hard… And I found the section in...

    Rear axle leaking

1940 Deluxe…. One of my rear brakes is completely soaked with gear oil from the differential. I drained the diff, and I got the drum off and now I’m not sure how to replace the axle seal. Can I pull the axle out? And if so, how? or do I have to take the banjo differential apart? I was...
