Brother inlaw has a 30 that was rebuilt in the 1950’s by sears and roebuck company
And it had a spot on the side of the block that had been fixed
So yes it’s very possible

You might want to check for intake leak if u have a backfire going on
I had what sounds like the same issue and it was intake sucking air by the gasket
Merry Christmas and good luck[emoji1374]

Over thinking it
It vents up thru the torque tube as long as u are still running it
If you are running a open drive shaft
Then yrs you will need an external vent

Comman sense
It’s not rocket science
Unless you’re going to use the oem shock mounts
Cut them off and run the backing plates straight up as they were designed
End off issues
Just saying

Why not use a timing light and start playing with it so when your lever is all the down it will only advance as high as 28
Not that hard to do

Sounds like mine under load when not warmed up yet
Hasn’t hurt anything yet, had it all apart this past winter and found nothing out of the ordinary, put it back together and it still makes the noise
Beginning to wonder if it’s moisture related, bottom of intake has a lot moisture dripping off...
Put a small bottle of K Seal in it if it’s not coming out the over flow k seal will take. Care of what ever leak you may have it is great stuff little pricy but worth it
