    Unsaddled

The bracket which supports the Top Saddle on my 1930 Model A has completely sheared off, and consequently the Top Saddle is progressing steadily downwards through the panel. I've managed to peel back the trim, and am part way to removing the parts of the bracket. Does anyone know where I can get...

    No Going Backwards

Thanks Tom, I must say your hub looks much smarter than mine. I don't know much about the provenance of the car, but it quite likely has a number of aftermarket parts on it. I'll move the washer when reassembling. Since I discovered that the studs weren't really swaged in at all, but had a bit...

    No Going Backwards

Thanks, have ordered some shims. The Torque setting used last Saturday was my arm strength in a dark wet Welsh field! Note improvised use of a Manitou fork truck as a handy jack!

    No Going Backwards

Thanks for all of your help. I've now dismantled both rear hubs, and find that on one side I've managed to screw in the hub so far that the back of the studs was binding on a brake pivot pin. I didn't think that it should be possible to do this with a socket and bar - does it suggest that...

Thanks for your replies, will investigate the parking brake assembly, and also see what comes out of the diff. Steve

    No Going Backwards

I recently took my Model A on a trial in Wales. We blew a rear tyre, and found that a couple of wheel studs were loose. Managed to change the wheel and tightened the nuts, and they didn't seem to be fouling the brake mechanism. The odd thing we found later was that although the car...

    Steering Box leak

Thanks for all of your answers. After a number of non-auto related distractions I decided to take the steering box out of the car and get it on the bench, to see what's leaking. I have an end plate with the 'non-leak' tube on it, which seems OK (no holes or splits) and is about 6" long, so goes...

    Steering Box leak

Thanks It's not easy to see where the leak is, but the switch had a lot of oil inside it, and oil was dripping around the box. Will clean it up and refill and see if I can work out where it's busting out. I've been advised to use 600W oil, not grease, but it seems others don't share this idea.

    Steering Box leak

Thanks I'm using end plate with tube, and there's a paper gasket between the end plate and the housing. I think the oil's getting out there, but need to clean and watch it closely to see where it's escaping from

    Steering Box leak

Thanks, will take a look. Doesn't sound as if my leak is down to this?

    Steering Box leak

Hi, I've just rebuilt and fitted the steering box on my 1930 Phaeton. On filling the box with oil, it soon started leaking into the switch and most places. The gasket kit had a black rubber washer, about 1" in diameter, and I couldn't work out where this was supposed to go, so wonder if this...
